The Florida Boards of Medicine have released rules for "Assistant Physicians" which permits medical school graduates who have not matched, but passed the USMLE, to practice under the supervision of a FL licensed physician (MD/DO). Enacting legislation was passed during the 2024 legislative session, which allows a supervising physician to oversee no more than two graduate assistant physicians who can only practice in this capacity for no more than three years. The specific rules for allopathic Chapter 458 and osteopathic physicians Chapter 459 can be downloaded HERE.

A graduate assistant physician must have agreed to enter into a written protocol drafted by a physician with a full, active, and unencumbered license via the respective board of medicine and submit a copy of the same with the application for licensure. The protocol must specify the duties and responsibilities of the graduate assistant physician and include the following protocols provided by rule. The FAFP has developed a generic protocol for family physicians to utilize in their practice.
