MD. Farmers Gear Up to Fight Power Line

PSEG and industry advocates say the line is necessary to meet the region’s rising energy demand due, in part, to the recent proliferation of power-hungry data centers in Maryland and Virginia. The company, which held contentious public meetings over the summer, has planned another series of meetings next month to again address resident and landowner concerns. Baltimore County – Tuesday, November 12th at 6:00 PM. Carroll County – Wednesday, November 13th at 6:00 PM. Frederick County – Thursday, November 14th at 6:00 PM. Learn more online here


Maryland Cover Crop Program

For cover crops incorporated (conventional, no-till, or broadcasted with tillage) into fields November 6th through 15th, there is a base payment of $40 an acre.

Please note that due to the overwhelming response to this year’s Cover Crop Program, MDA has exceeded their funding threshold. To ensure they can accommodate all applicants, the “Delayed Termination Incentive” will not be offered this year. If you requested this incentive on your application, you total eligible grant amount will be reduced accordingly. Read more here.


Maryland Farm & Harvest, Season 12

MPT's original series Maryland Farm & Harvest returns for its 12th season on Tuesday, November 12th with the first of 13 new half-hour episodes. The November 12th season premiere features Deere Valley Farm for their winter wheat harvest, Downey Family Farm raising Longhorn cattle, and a Brewery for the Local Buy. More than 16 million viewers have watched Maryland Farm & Harvest since its debut in 2013. Ther series has traveled to nearly 500 farms, fisheries, and other agriculture-related locations during the first 11 seasons. Read more online here.


Endangered Species Act Toolbox

The Pesticide and Endangered Species Educational Resources Toolbox catalogs educational resources including guidance documents, handouts, presentations, informational webinars, and other resources relating to EPA’s endangered species work. EPA developed the materials in this toolbox for a variety of stakeholders who may have differing levels of knowledge about EPA’s efforts to protect listed species. Check it out here

National Wheat Yield Contest 2024 Winners


The National Wheat Yield Contest announced the 26 national and 94 state winners for the 2024 contest. This year's contest had 516 entries, the most ever! Bradley Rill of Hampstead, MD yielded 145.89 bushels per acre with Mid-Atlantic Seeds 139. Read the full press release online here.

Install A Grass Buffer on ShoreRivers


Farmers and agricultural landowners in the Chester watershed (Kent and Queen Anne’s counties) are eligible to take advantage of a new grass buffer and grasslands program through ShoreRivers. In partnership with the Delmarva Restoration and Conservation Network and generous funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, we’re currently able to provide technical assistance, flexible width buffers, and incentive payments for those who participate. Grower Pivoting to Late-Season Irrigation


The long dry spell in early fall through Delmarva region has many farmers turning on their irrigation pumps again, a fairly uncommon practice this time of year. Established small grains use about 0.02 – 0.03 inches of water per day in no-till settings and 0.04 – 0.05 inches under conventional tillage. James Adkins recommended small, frequent applications between 0.02 – 0.35 inches every four to eight days to help the crop’s shallow roots. Read more online here.

The 2025 application is currently open and will close on January 15th! The Maryland Grain Producers voted to fund two grantees with a $2,000 grant. These funds will be sent to the recipient after they have obtained their license. Apply online here.
