Volume 146 | March 21st, 2025 | | | While the disposal of human waste isn't the hottest topic at thee ol' water cooler, it's a vital part of every property that (unfortunately) gets forgotten about or ignored for the most part. One could argue when a system operates properly, it slowly makes its way to the back of your mind, where it eventually gets filed into the, 'Out of Sight, Out of Mind' folder. Until 12 years goes by (the average length of homeownership) and you go to sell your home. If you're lucky you'll be on the market for a week before accepting an offer, and then the buyer will have their inspections. This is when the literal shit hits the distribution box and gets stuck, because | | the Redwood roots have intruded in by meticulously creeping up your leach lines over the past decade while you sat idly by. This exact hypothetical happens constantly here in Humboldt County, which sucks, because it can cost tens of thousands of dollars to replace a leach field, and that's if you're lucky. If you're unlucky, those blissfully ignorant years had an even graver impact on your pocket book, because guess what, your septic tank is cracked. Now you're looking at an additional $10,000 - $20,000 depending on the specifications of your system, how easy it is to access, and where your property is located. But of course, this nightmare can be easily avoided by having your septic system inspected once every three to five years. An inspection usually costs around $500, which is less than the average yearly sewer fee of $612 for a home that is connected to a city sewer system. Then you can catch the root intrusion in its infancy and can correct the issue with ease, or if you do uncover a crack in your tank, you can have it pumped, and resealed at a fraction of the cost of having your tank replaced. Long story short, don't bury your head in the sand, be proactive when it comes to your septic system to ensure things remain regular. That goes for your entire property, getting a Pest and/or General Home Inspection every few years can alert you of the minor issues before they turn into major ones.
