Interim Dean and Priest-in-Charge's Note

Goodness, what a week. On behalf of St. John’s Cathedral, our hearts ache for everyone throughout the city of Los Angeles whose lives have been devastated by the fires that continue to rage. We grieve with you and everyone experiencing the death of loved ones, loss of homes and belongings, and properties and places that were sanctuaries of happiness, rest and peace. Let us give thanks and express our most sincere gratitude for the first responders, fire fighters, emergency medical teams, emergency relief workers, police, and everyone risking their own lives to save people, animals and homes, and decrease catastrophic destruction.

Please know, you are not alone – all of us at St. John’s Cathedral are here for you. Our church doors are open wide to welcome you, and to journey with you through the days, months and years to come. There are numerous resources at hand, but if there’s something we can do please do not hesitate to let us know. We are listening for how we can help and extend God’s love and support as we face tragedy all around.

As you know, one of our priests has lost his home in the fires. The Rev. Mel Soriano is safe, and beginning to wrap his head and heart around this next chapter of his life with Stephen. We are inviting members of St. John’s to make a monetary gift to Rev. Mel if you are so moved and in a financial position to do so. The gift of cash is preferred over possible gifts.

In addition to a donation, we are inviting all of you to select and give one of your own Christmas ornaments (before they are packed away) to create a box of ornaments for Mel and Stephen next year. This idea came from Mel when he was mourning the loss of the ornaments that he and Stephen had collected over the years – gone in the fire. Next year and for years after when they unpack Christmas, this box of ornaments will remind Mel and Stephen of your love for them, and will create a new memory for them to carry forward. Please bring these ornaments to church this Sunday. It will be important for Mel to have us gather as a community at this time of great loss.

On the horizon, there are also important gatherings and work to be done. Next week after church, we will hear from members who have expressed an interest to serve on the Vestry of St. John’s for a term of service, and I will present a budget to be approved at our annual meeting on January 26, one week later.

Additional income is needed to balance our budget for next year. Please let us know your intentions to give and support the staff and ministries of St. John’s Cathedral by making a pledge. This will make you eligible to vote at the annual meeting, and give voice and vote on the selection of a new dean, when it comes time to make that decision. The other alternative is to cut our budget at a moment of time when we all need each other the most.

Please stay safe, and find ways to stay connected to each other. Tell us if you have been impacted by the fires, and allow us to be present with you. God promises to be with us through it all, and with us now.

With love and blessings,

Anne+

Assisting the Rev. Melvin Soriano

Many have inquired about ways to assist the Rev. Mel Soriano (our Associate Priest) who, along with his partner Stephen, lost his residence to one of the wildfires currently ravaging Los Angeles and cities adjacent. Monetary gifts of cash or check may be made out to the cathedral with "The Rev. Mel Soriano" in the memo line.

Members of the congregation have decided to put together a brand new collection of Christmas ornaments for Rev. Mel and Stephen symbolizing this new chapter in their lives; a gift of love from the community to be cherished this time every year. Please take part by bringing one special ornament from your collection this Sunday to the 8.00 a.m. or 10.00 a.m. service.

A Message from the Senior Warden

Dear Siblings in Christ - it is with honor and gratitude that I inform you that I have appointed Mr. Luis Gonzalez to be the Transition Committee Chairman, previously known as the Profile Committee.

Mr. Gonzalez comes with a wealth of experience in the National Church and the Episcopal Church for many years. Mr. Gonzalez will be introduced to the congregation at the Annual Meeting 26 January 2025. I share this brief bio and photo for you to have the opportunity to acknowledge a gift to St. John's Cathedral.

For a biography of Mr. Gonzalez, click here.

Regarding the Transitional Committee

From the Senior Warden, Canon Lurelean Gaines

Nominations are open for the Transitional Committee of St. John's Cathedral.

Here is an opportunity to serve and be a part of a decision making body. There is a need for at least nine to fifteen persons to work together to determine where we are leading the congregation and by whom.

The ideal situation is to have representation which encompasses committed, caring, thoughtful individuals from different age groups and ethnic backgrounds who are willing to put in the time and energy to make informed decisions that allows the group to invite the full-time Dean for St. John's Cathedral.

If you are interested in this opportunity to serve please speak with the Committee Chairperson Mr. Luis Gonzalez or me.

Thank you in advance for considering this task.

Annual Parish Meeting

Sunday, January 26, 2025

Important details concerning parish life will discussed. Members of the congregation should always plan to attend. A facilitator will also be present with members of the transition committee to discuss the ongoing process of calling the next Dean of St. John's Cathedral.

Updates on Coffee Hour

We’re excited to share a new way to make coffee hour after 10.00 a.m. extra special while celebrating our community. Starting January, we’re inviting everyone whose birthday falls in that current month to bring in some treats to share. This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to practice hospitality, generosity, and joyful thanksgiving in a simple but meaningful way.

If your birthday is in January, please use the sign-up sheets on the bulletin board in the fountain courtyard or contact the Rev. Mel Soriano. Whether it’s cookies, fruit, or something homemade or heartier, your contribution will help make our time of fellowship even more joyful.

Thank you for sharing your special month with the community—we can’t wait to celebrate together!
