Twenty twenty-five will be a transitional year for me and the
Angela King Gallery.
In 1977 when I landed in New Orleans at 23 years old, I couldn’t have imagined that 47 years later I would have enjoyed an amazing career in the most rewarding and fulfilling world of art. The plan was six months but New Orleans has an allure I couldn’t resist and I stayed.
Do the math, it’s time to slow down.
We moved into 241 Royal in 2007, and renovated a second time in 2019. The change began in 2020 when the pandemic struck… I had been open 360 days a year, 8 hours a day for over 35 years…
16-18 employees, 12 exhibitions a year and had shown over 300 artists at that time.
Now with a staff of five in the gallery and Kathy working remotely, we were open 250 days this past year.
We held two salons, four popups and three exhibitions in 2024
and have lightened the load!
AKG is moving off of the Royal St entrance and will be accessed from 710 Bienville in the middle of the building.
During 2024, getting ready for the next phase, we installed a wall diagonally in the center of the gallery leaving around 1000 square feet, first floor exhibition space. The redesigned space still has the fabulous swinging door, Dr Seuss, the 1860s elevator, and Carlos’s amazing curved staircase to the second floor with 3000 sq ft of
exhibition space upstairs.
I’ll be exhibiting most of the same artists I do now and since storage will be at a premium, we will have a great sale on art we have in inventory and have no room to store.
Kathy O’Shaughnessy will be retiring after almost 40 years of handling all the behind the scene action.
I’m mostly worried about replacing her because she’s irreplaceable..
The move won’t happen until April or May and we’ll likely have a party celebrating the end of an era or the beginning of the new!
Downstairs or up!
Come summer time look for the blue square
AKG sign on Bienville
instead of the corner of Royal Street
and come visit the new Angela King Gallery…
Much love and gratitude for your unending support,
Angela
