October Deadlines for Assessment Appeals and Tax Bill Corrections

There are two deadlines fast approaching in October. First is the assessment appeal deadline. The last day to file a formal appeal with the Lake County Board of Review is Tuesday October 15th. Formal appeals must be completed on-line using the Lake County Smartfile application. A link to Smartfile is below. There is still a short window of opportunity for my office to complete an in-office review prior to filing an appeal. I encourage anyone with questions to contact my office as soon as possible.

The second deadline is for correcting the current 2023 tax bill which is payable in 2024. The deadline to do so is October 31st. A change can only be made for physical errors in the calculation of the property value such as incorrect number of bathrooms or incorrect square footage. The other change that can be made is to apply any missing exemptions. To determine which exemptions are applied, please check your tax bill or check the Lake County website. A link to the Lake County website is below.

The most common are exemptions available:

·        General Homestead Exemption, granted to owner occupied homes.

·        Senior Homestead Exemption, granted to an owner who has reached age 65 during the tax year.

·        Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption, granted to an owner who is 65 and has total household income less than $65,000.

·        Disabled Persons' Homestead Exemption, granted to a disabled person having either Federal Social Security Benefits or Illinois Disabled Person Identification.

·        Standard Homestead Exemption for Veterans with Disabilities, A disabled veteran or un-remarried surviving spouse can receive this exemption with a service-connected disability.

Please contact my office with any questions regarding assessments or exemptions.
