Bringing Art to Life: Free 'Hockney + You' Events Inspire Young Artists | |
OTAS has partnered with Palm Springs Art Museum and Palm Springs Life to offer a series of free community events that invite children to create art inspired by the legendary David Hockney. On February 22, OTAS transformed into a vibrant hub of creativity, with young artists eagerly dipping brushes into bright paints, layering bold colors, and exploring their imagination.
Hockney + You is more than just an art activity—it’s an interactive experience designed to bring the dynamic energy of Hockney’s work beyond the museum walls and into the heart of the Coachella Valley. Through hands-on workshops and playful experimentation with color and perspective, children and families are invited to unleash their inner artist.
The Hockney + You event series is inspired by the museum’s current exhibition, David Hockney: Perspective Should Be Reversed: Prints from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation. Known for his innovative techniques across painting, drawing, and printmaking, Hockney challenges traditional artistic conventions, making his work the perfect catalyst for young artists to think outside the box.
Programs like these emphasize accessibility, providing materials and instruction while allowing children the freedom to create.
The best part? Everyone is invited. Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a parent, or simply curious, the Hockney + You series offers a unique opportunity to step into the world of creative expression. This free event series continues with upcoming dates: March 8 in Coachella, and March 16 in Palm Springs. Don’t miss the chance to experience the magic of Hockney through the eyes of the next generation of artists!

OTAS STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Jennifer Claire

Tell us a little about yourself and your background.
Hi, my name is Jennifer. I am a pastor’s wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a part-time potter. I work full-time designing and engineering wooden roof trusses. I have a bachelor's degree in business management and administration. While I do not have formal art training, I have developed a passion, love, and appreciation for ceramics.
How did you begin taking classes at Old Town Artisan Studios?
We moved to La Quinta in 2015. Before that, I was enrolled in an Adult Ed ceramics program in Claremont, which captivated my attention. My husband found OTAS and gifted me two classes for my birthday and anniversary. I have been an avid ceramic student ever since. I started with Stefania’s beginning ceramics class, where I built a solid foundation in various techniques. In 2020, Colby became our instructor, inspiring me with his out-of-the-box thinking and technical expertise. His teaching recalibrated my throwing interest. Later, Roark challenged me to move out of my comfort zone, expanding my approach to shapes and textures. Angel, whom I first met as a student, has grown into an amazing instructor and emerging artist. Watching his journey has been inspiring.
| |
What has inspired you as a student and artist?
My inspiration comes from everything around me. I see shapes, colors, and textures and ask how I can translate them into clay. I am drawn to functional ware with an earthy aesthetic. I love to integrate ceramics into everyday life and gift them to family and friends. My work often features carving, notching, and glaze layering. When I need a creative reset, I enjoy throwing large stackable vases and bowls. I have several pieces available in the retail shop, including my “Peace Platters” and marbleized clay earrings. The shop is a wonderful addition to the studio, with proceeds supporting OTAS’s outreach programs. It’s an honor to showcase my work alongside other talented artists and contribute to the community.

Why is it important to have art accessibility in our community?
Art accessibility is the beauty of OTAS. I’ve learned the value of community and interpersonal relationships. Working through the creative process—regardless of the outcome—is essential. Encouragement from fellow students makes a difference, and I strive to give and receive that support.
The OTAS campus is always alive with creativity, from gallery openings to community events. What drew me here was my passion for clay, but what keeps me coming back is the love for the people and community.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Two aspects of ceramics stand out to me: age diversity and limitlessness. I’ve learned from both young and seasoned artists, each with unique skills and stories. The limitless possibilities in ceramics inspire me—there’s always something new to explore. The collaboration and encouragement at OTAS make this community truly special.
