Medicaid coverage is critical to millions of children and adults with disabilities around the country. Here in New Jersey, over 1.6 million people have a disability that impacts their lives, and Medicaid is critically important to maintain their independence and to receive services and supports that make living in the community possible.

Medicaid provides essential support services beyond access to healthcare, many of which can be lifesaving. Without it, those receiving long-term, comprehensive care in institutions, such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and residential treatment centers would also lose their home.

Cutting back or capping Medicaid would gravely impact people with disabilities, severing access to supports and services, vital care, and critical medications. The loss of Medicaid benefits would cause financial burden to many, and undoubtedly, diminished quality of life for people with disabilities.

12.12 24 Press Release

Disability Rights New Jersey applauds New Jersey’s Office of the State Comptroller’s investigative report uncovering millions of dollars of Medicaid fraud by owner and operators of New Jersey nursing home.

The OSC report details how the owner and operators of SJEC engaged in Medicaid fraud by stealing millions of dollars for personal use at the expense of the residents of their nursing home. While the owners profited personally, residents of New Jersey’s worst-rated nursing home languished in an understaffed and under-resourced facility.

While Disability Rights New Jersey applauds this investigation and the action taken by the Comptroller to suspend SJEC, Sterling Manor, and the individuals involved, we know through our work that this investigation unfortunately highlights a problem not unfamiliar to New Jersey.
