 John Leet, SVR President

January 2025

president@svr-pca.org

First off, I would like to extend a big thank you to all the members for supporting me for club president and having the confidence that I can lead the club. It is indeed an honor to serve and with the help of a talented board of directors and committee chairs. I would like to acknowledge the fantastic job that Rik Larson has done during his recent tenure as President, and I am very glad that he will still be on the board in the capacity of Past President. I have large shoes to fill.

SVR had a busy year in 2024. Overall, the club conducted 15 Tours, 10 Autocross, 8 Rally and 39 Social events. Thanks to everyone for helping to make it a huge success!

The calendar is quickly filling up for 2025. Members really stepped up with event proposals during our planning meeting in November, and we have many more are in the works. Our club is only as active as our membership, and we are still seeking chairs to fill a couple of key roles.

The Technical Chair position has been vacant for some time. You don’t need to be a master mechanic or technical wiz to take this position but must be somewhat inclined. You will have the flexibility to define the role as you see fit, but main job is to submit monthly articles to the Drifter with topics on car maintenance, engine, transmission, and suspension issues. Alternatively, or in addition, you can arrange for technical sessions by arranging events with independent mechanics. Topics are really wide open.

The Chairity Chair has become vacant as Dick Macfarlane is stepping down after a fabulous stint in this role. The job consists mainly of identifying and executing charity and community based opportunities for the club to support.

If you are interested in volunteering for either of these roles, or would like more information, please reach out!

As of this writing, SVR has 1,584 members, including 601 co-members and 51 PCA juniors. Did you know you can register your partner or juniors free of charge? Go to pca.org for more information, or feel free to contact our membership director Steve Long. Contact information for all board members and chairpersons are available on our website.

Here’s to an outstanding 2025!

Rick Duste

Vice President/Tour Chair

vicepresident@svr-pca.org

2025 is here and the Club has a full calendar of great events this year . . . 73 member participant events (excluding board meetings) . . .with more surely to be added.  See the calendar list elsewhere in the newsletter.  Coming up soon is the Boxenstopp Cars & Coffee at Porsche Rocklin Sunday 1/19; the Pre-Valentine Dinner at Palermo Restaurante Italiano in Elk Grove hosted by Cyndee Peart Monday 2/10; Autocross and Rally Schools in March along with the Zone 7 Awards Banquet for Zone winners in Autocross and Concours that will be hosted at Porsche Sacramento’s new facility.   Tech Sessions were identified in the last member survey as something members would like to see.  Collin Fat is working on a plan for those as you read this.

I would like to take a moment to recognize our Club sponsors and advertisers, and encourage you to patronize them to show your appreciation. Their financial support goes a long way keeping the participant and entry fees down for our members.  Our major sponsors Porsche Rocklin and Porsche Sacramento are key supporters across the entire spectrum of Club activities.  Signature Wheels and Detail Maniac stepped up with financial sponsorship of the Conn Valley Winery Tour last year cutting the cost to members in half.

And the Advertisers here in the Drifter and our Website are equally as important supporters.  Show your support and thank them when you see them.

Great year ahead, look forward to seeing you all at one of our 2025 events.

Formula E ---- the 2024-2025 Season

The 11th season of the FIA Formula E World Championship started last month with the first race conducted in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This is a motor racing championship for electrically powered vehicles and is a competition for electric open-wheel racing cars.

The first race was won by Mitch Evans of the Jaguar TCS Racing Team. Finishing in 2nd place was Antonino Felix da Costa driving the #13 Porsche 99X Electric for the Tag Heuer Porsche Formula E Team. The other Porsche team driver and defending champion, Pascal Wehrlein, driving car #1, did not finish the race.

For the 2024-2025 season:

·  11 teams, 22 drivers

·  Maserati, Jaguar, Nissan, Lola-Yamaha, and Mahindra are other manufacturers

· 2 other teams (Andretti and Cupra Kiro) are running Porsche Electric powertrains that are updated to meet current regulations

·  There are no American drivers.

·  16 races are scheduled (Monaco and Toyko will have 2 each over a weekend)

· Miami will be the only race conducted in the USA (April 12th at Homestead-Miami Speedway --- and will be the longest Formula E circuit used in history ---- over 2 miles)

·  This is the year of the Gen3 Evo

o a more robust front wing

o  new Hankook tires that are designed to provide better grip

an active front power train to be used in qualifying, race start, and during ‘attack mode’

· the next race will be in Mexico City on January 11th

·  TV coverage is limited……………the races themselves are less than 60 minutes in length.

ROLEX 24 at Daytona --- January 25-26

This is the first IMSA race for 2025 and it is a BIGGIE!

·        A total of 61 cars in 4 classes racing at Daytona (using the road course).

·        TV coverage starts on Saturday morning (10 am PT) on NBC. Then they switch over to Peacock (streaming) overnight. Not too sure about the coverage on Sunday morning for the finish at 10 am but likely to be NBC.

·        There are 4 Porsche 963 cars running in the GTP class (total of 12 cars). The Porsche Penske Motorsport team is fielding 2 of them while Proton Competition and JDC-Miller Motorsport are fielding just one car each. There are also 3 Cadillac’s competing as well as 2 BMW’s in this class. Also 2 Acura’s and a single Lamborghini.

·        Pascal Wehrlein, the champion from last years Formula E series, is listed as one of the drivers for the JDC-Miller Motorsport Porsche 963.

·        In the GTD class there are 22 cars. One of those cars, the Iron Dames team, lists 4 women drivers. They are in a Porsche 911 GT3(992). They are car #83.

To be a host for a dinner,

lunch, or brunch

Our club thrives with the generous efforts of our members

providing social opportunities for the rest of us. There are many examples on going such as Porsches and Pints, tours,

Saturday breakfast, etc. However, we need more opportunities to “share a meal - break bread together”.

As of this writing there will be the pre-Valentines dinner

In February, and there is a dinner event being planned for March. That means the months of April through October are available for members to be hosts inviting the rest of us to enjoy your favorite restaurant within our Sacramento region.

So please let me know your ideas for hosting so we can get dates on the 2025 calendar!

Thank you!

SVR Rally Coverage

by Darrel Huckabay

During 2024 SVR presented a series of six time-speed-distance (tsd) rallies, each of which were approximately 4 hours in duration. On a tsd rally competitors, consisting of a driver and navigator team, are required to follow route instructions at specified speeds to arrive on time to nearest second, not early or late, at checkpoints along the route, the location of which are not provided in advance.

In addition to awards for each rally, there are series awards for the driver and navigator. The series awards are based on performance on up to four of the events with a requirement that to be eligible for an award participation was required in a minimum of three events.

Series award winners for Novice and Senior classes for 2024 are as follows:

It is planned to present the awards to the winners at SVR’s First Saturday Breakfast at Brookfields Restaurant in Rancho Cordova on February 1st.

Plans are underway for the 2025 SVR Rally Series. Expect that there will be a similar number of rallies during the year and a rally school early in 2025. The rally school will be designed to provide information on course following and the basics of rally navigation. Watch for details on SVR’s website and in the Drifter.

CHRISTMAS PARTY 2024

By Mardi Quain

It was an amazing, joyful, well organized, fun gathering of SVR members with family and friends. All made possible by Kim and Rachel Nelson at their beautiful home in Shingle Springs. And this year a new twist with the party plans was having an afternoon event.

Comments and attendance indicate this change is a winner.

The Christmas decorations of trees, lights and table settings were beautiful and fostered the party atmosphere, which was enhanced by our own music DJ maestro Dick MacFarlane.

Attendance was 140+ SVR members including special guests, Dr. Kris Korn and Rob, Nicky and Cody Pane from our SVR designated charity – “Ride to Walk”. Also joining us was Porsche Sacramento General Manager, Demi Le Marquand and his wife Robin. Our charity, Ride to Walk, benefitted from the generosity of our members by receiving $14,910. resulting from amazing auction items from Alpha Auto Works in Folsom, Track Masters, Porsche Rocklin and Porsche Sacramento as well as credit card and cash donations and Share the Wealth contributions by our members.

The buffet of roast beef, salmon in lemon sauce, vegetable medley, scalloped potatoes was finished with a broad offering of sweet desserts. All comments heard were variations of “yummo”!

On behalf of your Board members Thank You Kim and Rachel for a party to remember. And Thank You fellow members for making our Christmas party a perfect start of the Holiday Season!

If you were not able to attend this year’s party, do not despair as plans are under way for the 2025 Christmas Party extravaganza.

SVR’s Christmas Party Charity Auction for Ride To Walk

By

Kim Nelson

For those of you who are still not familiar with the nonprofit organization, Ride To Walk, it was started 40 years ago by Dr. Kris Korn to provide therapeutic horse riding for children and adults with special needs ranging from learning disabilities to quadriplegia. Over the past 40 years, Dr. Korn and her staff have helped hundreds if not thousands of people with disabilities. There is one family close to our Porsche community that has been receiving help for their son through Ride To Walk for over 15 years – the Pane family – Rob, Nicky and Cody. Rob has worked for the Niello Company for over 30 years and many of us met him when he became the Service Manager at Niello Porsche in 2011. Today, Rob is the Service Manager for Niello Volvo and is also the Curator of Rick Niello’s car collection.

At SVR Christmas Party it was decided to do a short live auction to raise money to help with infrastructure improvements on their 20 acre property in Penryn. Five items were donated for the auction by several SVR supporters. Stephen Richards, owner of Alpha Auto Works, donated a $2400 Car detailing and Paint Protection Film service. Doug Gale, owner of Track Masters, donated two track days and Porsche Sacramento and Rocklin General Managers, Demi Le Marquand and Alan Vidlund, donated a Porsche Spa Day. (The spa day includes bringing your Porsche to the dealership and getting a loaner Porsche for the day while your Porsche is treated to an oil change and complete detail.) These 5 items generated $4750! Rob Pane won one of the track days and then allowed it to be auctioned off again to raise more money for Ride To Walk. After the final item had been auctioned off, SVR members showed their generosity by donating an additional $4710 in cash, credit cards and checks!  In addition to that, your SVR Board of Directors voted in October to contribute $1000 from SVR’s Share The Wealth program and then to match member contributions up to $2500! Through the generosity of our SVR members we were able to donate a grand total of $14,910 to help Support Dr. Kris Korn and the Ride To Walk program.

I would like to personally thank every member of our club that donated to support Ride to Walk. Those SVR members at the Christmas party got to see firsthand the tears of joy in Dr. Korn and the Pane family’s eyes and I also got to see a few tears in the eyes of some of our club members. Thank you! I would also like to thank Steven Roberts, Doug Gale, Demi Le Marquand and Alan Vidlund for their generous donations to our auction. Thank you! And finally, my wife Rachel and I would like to thank all the SVR members who helped us host this year’s party; Tom and Kathy Sansone, Mike Gabbard, Mardi Quain, Kelly Murphy, Dick MacFarlane, Dan and Terry Richards, Terry Taylor and Kurt Campbell. Thank you! We couldn’t have done it without your help and support.

Sharing a quick summary of what we collected this year for Ride The Walk, before I issue the check to Mardi. In total, we will be donating $14,660.23 to our charity!

Big thank you to Kim, Kelly and Mardi for organizing and coordinating. Big thank you to the donors, that contributed gifts to the auction.

And not least, thank you to our members that opened their wallets. I'm proud to be a member of such a generous club!!

If you have any questions on above amounts, let me know!

Merry Christmas!

Michael Born, SVR Treasurer

2024 SVR Autocross Wrap-up

2024 AX series awards were presented to the winners at a special luncheon hosted at El Tapatio Restaurant in Citrus Heights. Member of the Month John & Susan Mcnameee

Warm regards, Susan, Gail, and Tammy

The Porschettes holiday dinner event was held at the prestigious Fat’s Asia Bistro banquet room. Twenty three members, including several new ladies, savored family-style dining with dishes like ASIA BISTRO & DIM SUM BAR’s Honey Walnut Prawns, Sweet and Sour Pork, Canton Pepper Steak, Orange Chicken, Hong Kong Special Chow Mein, Chicken Fried Rice, and the world-renowned Fat’s Banana Cream Pie. Attendees adorned themselves in festive attire, showcasing their personal style and connected through common interest in driving Porsches. We engaged fun conversations on various topics, such as cars, family, friendships, fashion, and travel. The evening included raffles, Gail’s florentine treats, and Susan’s surprise gift vouchers to ReNew in support of Acres of Hope for homeless women with children.

Here are some of our favorite holiday quotes:

“It’s not what’s on the table that matters; it’s who is in the chair.”

“It’s not what’s under the tree that matters; it’s who’s around it.”

Year 2024 Porschettes finished fast and furiously with five events. President Rik Larson presented committee chair gifts to Susan and Gail; and expressed gratitude to our dedicated volunteers. Many thanks to the organizers, Susan and Gail, and special support from Collin Fat.

The next Porschettes event will be held on March 6, 2025 at Lynda Calvert’s backyard. We encourage you to invite other ladys to join you for an event to meet Porschettes women.

SVR Christmas/Holiday Party

by Collin Fat

A big thank you to Kim and Rachel Nelson for opening up their beautiful home to more than 140 SVR members. It takes days if not weeks to prepare their garage and it showed with the amazing decorations and holiday lights. The caterer did a wonderful job feeding us all with some delicious steamed salmon and roasted tri tip.

Please enjoy some of the photos of the event at the following link SVR Christmas Party Photos
