"No winter lasts forever;

no spring skips its turn."

-Hal Borland

The chart of Wisconsin seasons always makes me chuckle. This is not the first year I have shared this picture and it won't be the last because it continues to ring true. Last week felt like Fool's Spring with warmer temps and sunshine: a taste of what's to come. However the forecasted cooler temps and snow remind us that it is still winter. And that is perfectly okay.

Personally I am still hoping for a handful of major snowfalls. I have yet to enjoy a crackling fireplace, a hot mug of cocoa and a heavy blanket of snow covering the outdoors. I want that!

I am confident plenty of people would be happy to fast forward through the next six weeks and launch straight into spring. Trust me, my flip flops are calling! However, snow has an important role to play in here in Wisconsin and all over the Midwest.

Wisconsin thrives on winter. Here are a few reminders that may help you endure the snow.

Winter recreation

Snow is a key part of winter sports and recreation, such as skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and snowmobiling.

Water supply

Snow is a source of drinking water-helps fill rivers & reservoirs

Plant protection

Snow insulates plants - protects them from freezing & thawing cycles

Vegetation

Snow is a main source of moisture for vegetation in the spring

Wildlife

Snow affects wildlife migration, hibernation, and survival

Temperature regulation

Snow helps regulate the temperature of the Earth's surface

Hal was correct in stating that "No winter lasts forever". If you are patiently waiting for snow, I'm with you. If you are counting the days till the trees bud and the flowers grow, I can guarantee that's coming too!
