Message from Your Principal and Assistant Principal

Dear Connect HS Families,

It was great to spend some time with some of our families this past Monday at Coffee with Admin (our next Coffee with Admin will be on March 3rd at 5pm). During that meeting Robert and I spent some time re-sharing information and resources from the Central Office (originally sent on January 29th) in regards to the safety of ALL students and families. We wanted to reshare this information and let you all know that “Red Cards” will be distributed soon to all students.

Take care,

Tami and Robert (Please be sure to read the entire newsletter as there is additional school information)

To Our Da Vinci Schools and Wiseburn Unified Families,

As leaders of Da Vinci Schools and Wiseburn Unified School District, we write to address the concerns stemming from the changing landscape on immigration policy within and beyond schools. Our community includes many immigrant families, and we want to assure you that we stand firmly in support of all students’ and families’ access to public education, regardless of citizenship or immigration status.

The United States has long been a nation of immigrants, enriched by the culture, resilience, and determination of those seeking the American dream. Immigrant families, including those seeking asylum, contribute to the strength and diversity of our country. Our schools play an essential role in helping immigrant students adapt, thrive, and succeed.

We are committed to ensuring that every student and family in our schools feels safe, welcomed, and supported. This commitment is firmly grounded in the law. The U.S. Supreme Court has long upheld that all children in the United States have the right to attend and participate in public schools, regardless of their or their families’ citizenship status (Plyler v. Doe, 457 U.S. 202 (1982)).

To that end, we want to reiterate our protocols for responding to immigration-enforcement actions:

1. Restricted Campus Access: Consistent with applicable policies for Da Vinci Schools and the District, access to our campuses will remain limited consistent with applicable law, including requirements for a valid judicial warrant and/or exigent circumstances.

2. Student Information Protections: Staff and administrators will work with legal counsel to avoid disclosure unless required by law, e.g. judicial warrant or applicable subpoena or court order. Parents or guardians will be notified before any information is shared as allowable by the warrant or court order.

3. Limited Data Collection: Our schools do not collect or maintain information about students’ or families’ citizenship status unless required to administer a state or federally supported educational program.

We understand the importance of trust in the relationship between schools and families. We are committed to transparency in our actions and to ensuring that our schools remain welcoming spaces where students can attend, participate, and thrive without fear.

Additional information regarding the District’s Response to Immigration Enforcement is available in the District’s BP/AR 5145.13. For additional information regarding Da Vinci Schools please refer to ‘Section 12: Response to Immigration Enforcement’ within our School Safety Plan.

If your student is experiencing fear, stress, or anxiety related to this issue, please reach out to the school-based mental health professional at your school for support.

To help us respond effectively and support all students, it is essential that all families keep their contact information up to date, including emergency contacts. Each student should have at least two emergency contacts, who can be family members or other trusted adults designated by the parent or guardian. Please update your student's contacts by speaking to the office manager at your school.

For families seeking additional support or information, additional resources are publicly available at LACOE Immigrant Relations and Services, which includes guidance on family preparedness plans and access to legal resources.

Whatever challenges may arise, we stand together with our community and remain unwavering in our commitment to your children’s education, safety, and well-being.
