We give thanks to God who is always with us despite the situation of our country which has given birth to many other problems. Until now, the Health Centre is still offering its services to everyone in the area and its surroundings.
The year 2024 brought many challenges, from the beginning, especially with personnel changes. And also, with the death of the former Administrator or Head of the centre, Pastor Andre Philogene, who left a big void. The most important thing is God is always there to support us and encourage the personnel.
During these years, our biggest problem has been the insecurity that invades the area, and economic problems because all products have become more expensive, Yes, the health centre is still seeing patients but many who come are unable to pay for the services and medications. We desire to give them care and hope but that means that we are unable to cover our expenses. Poverty is increasing every day. People do not come to the hospital until they or their families are very ill. It is the critical cases that bring them to the emergency, without money. But by that time, they need much more expensive care. Because of this, we continue to go deeper in debt to the pharmacies where we purchase our supplies. At the same time, medicines and supplies for the laboratory continue to increase in cost.
Staff security has become an issue. Gens de Nantes has many new people who have moved in from Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas. Crime has escalated. The criminals are killing people with guns or machetes.
Let me share an incident that occurred a few months ago. One night, a man brought his wife who was hemorrhaging after giving birth at home. The midwife was called and she went to the maternity alone. While she was inside with the patient, several men with machetes came and stood on the porch. They kept threatening that if the lady died, they would kill the midwife. Thanks to God, the midwife was able to stop the bleeding, and the new mother did not die. But the midwife resigned. The staff encounter these types of situations at every moment.
We still work every day. Patients come from other areas especially, who need health services, even if they don’t have much money. Presently, we are seeing many cases of typhoid, hypertension, and different types of infections.
The Gens de Nantes Health Centre staff includes Dr. Cloridor, who is in charge, five nurses, a Tuberculosis agent, an archivist, two medical lab technicians, a housekeeper, a caretaker, and a cashier.
