Did You Know?
All patrons with print disabilities can access materials through the Perkins Library! In addition to over 250,000 unique titles, 25,000 braille titles, 500 audio and braille magazines, and 12,000 large print books, Perkins Library circulates audio-described Blu-Ray and DVD movies, downloadable books and magazines, museum passes, and instructional music materials to thousands of registered patrons with print disabilities. [Online] Tips on Planning a Trip to Europe

Looking to escape the winter blues and plan a great vacation? This presentation covers time-honored and new recommendations for planning your trip to Europe. This talk will be led by Gene Flynn, an Illinois native who has taught at the College of Lake County and Harper College, and serves on the board of the Institute for Continued Learning at Roosevelt University. He frequently gives travel presentations to libraries and senior centers around the country, and has traveled to more than a dozen European countries.

Trio Eris Concert

Join the Edgartown Public Library and the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society for this not-to-be-missed performance from Boston-based ensemble Trio Eris. Featuring violinist K. J. McDonald, cellist Annie Hyung, and pianist Andrew Chen, Trio Eris is the New England Conservatory’s newest Trio in Residence. The concert will feature pieces by Ravel and Schubert.

AARP Free Tax Help

Volunteers, certified and trained under the AARP Tax Aide Program, will be offering free income tax preparation assistance at the library for taxpayers, with a special emphasis on those sixty years and older.
Additional sessions will be offered on March 11th and April 8th. Sessions are by appointment only. Please call the Edgartown Council on Aging at 508-627-4368 to secure an appointment.

Trends in Menopause—Then and Now

Dr. Daniel E. Pesch and NP Marcy E. Holmes will be at the Edgartown Public Library to discuss how treatment of menopause has changed over the years, including the impact of a landmark study in 2002 by the Women’s Health Initiative. They will also discuss the latest recommendations on menopause treatment. A Q&A will follow the talk. | |

Opera Club: Puccini’s Tosca

From the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, February's Opera Club presents the renowned Jonathan Kent production of Puccini's Tosca. Filmed live in 2011, this atmospheric and intense potboiler features three of the greatest singers of that decade: bass/baritone Bryn Terfel as the sadistic Scarpia, tenor Jonas Kaufmann as Tosca's lover, Cavaradossi, and soprano Angela Gheorghiu as the diva, Floria Tosca. Maestro Antonio Pappano conducts the Royal Opera House Orchestra through Puccini's thrilling, dramatic score.
Sung in Italian with English subtitles, the opera runs approximately two hours, plus intermission. All adults are welcome.

Armchair Travel to the Republic of Georgia

Join library programs coordinator Claudia Taylor for a presentation about her recent travels in the Republic of Georgia, a country nestled in the Caucasus Mountains that is steeped in history. Through photos and discussion, Claudia will take you on a journey to Georgia’s capital city, Tbilisi, and the surrounding mountain towns and villages. Learn about the history, language, cuisine, and culture of this beautiful and ancient country. A Q&A will follow the presentation.

Join drummer and educator Rick Bausman for this three-part drumming class series. No prior experience is necessary. Dress comfortably and be prepared for a workout!

March 3rd: Cuban styles; Bembe; Guaguanco
March 10th: Haitian ceremonial drumming; Yanvalou Franc; Kongo

All year long, book group participants may select a book of their choosing based on each month's theme, and we'll get together to discuss our selections. Theme-related book recommendations for this month are offered here, but participants may select any book related to the theme. February’s challenge is “a book with the name of a city in the title.”

Join New York Times bestselling author Michael Tougias for a captivating talk on his newest book, Extreme Survival: Lessons from Those Who Have Triumphed Against All Odds. Drawing from over 100 interviews and historical accounts of people who have survived extraordinary circumstances, Tougias shares what he has learned about decision-making, survival, and resilience. He will discuss how these lessons can inspire all of us when facing life challenges. Tougias will also touch on his book, The Power of Positive Fishing, a chronicle of 25 years of striped bass fishing off Cape Cod.

Sound Bath with Trish Ginter

A sound bath creates an environment that allows you to pause and deeply listen, immerse yourself in sound, and offer your mind and body moments of reprieve and restoration. This experience will be led by Trish Ginter, who will use crystal singing bowls as well as other instruments to create a soundscape that will help you relax and explore deep listening.
Limited yoga mats and blankets are available; if you have your own, please bring them with you.

The Island's Best Clam Chowder

Winter is here, and with it comes cold nights and blustery weather. On nights like these, there's nothing better than cozying up with a steaming bowl of soup. Join Chef Look for the final installment of this winter soup series, where he makes a bold claim: showing us how to make the Island’s best clam chowder. By working with fresh quahogs harvested by the Edgartown Shellfish Department and using simple flavor layering techniques, Chef Look will show you the secret to this classic soup, done the best way.

[Online] Build It, Build It Better: Poetry Workshop with Donald Nitchie

In this monthly writing workshop with poet Donald Nitchie, participants will have an opportunity to create their own poem, prompted by a selection of poetry which will be read at the beginning of the workshop. Poets will also have a chance to read and discuss their own poem during the second half of the workshop, although there is no pressure to share. This workshop is perfect for beginning writers or anyone curious about writing in groups.
Once registered, you will receive the workshop materials by email. The focus of February’s workshop is “searching for the perfect rhyme” and will cover rhyme in classical and contemporary poetry.

Master knitter Cindy Bonnell presides over a sociable group of knitters on Wednesday afternoons. Experts and aspiring knitters of all levels of experience are welcome to bring their projects and drop in for support, inspiration, and advice.

Inkjet Cartridge Recycling Program | |
Support our local Vineyard League by recycling ink jet cartridges. The League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard has drop boxes for collecting used printer inkjet cartridges in all six towns, including at the Edgartown Library. Cartridges are sent to a recycler, keeping them out of landfills. Please note, inkjet cartridges are the only kind that can be accepted.
