September 6 - September 15, 2024 | |
Dear People of Saint Paul's,
I am delighted to tell you that Aubrey Hinkson has accepted my offer to become our new Director of Children and Youth Ministries. Aubrey will join the church staff in a half time capacity at the beginning of October and brings a tremendous amount of talent and dedication to our work with our young members. When she comes on staff, we will have achieved again one of the key missional goals identified in our strategic plan a few years ago. I say "again" because Kim Butler faithfully filled this role before our recent gap between staff persons. Kim's earlier work and the more recent work of a host of volunteers mean that Aubrey can build collaboratively on a strong foundation as these programs move forward. We'll greet her more formally in October, but please join me in giving thanks to God for this possibility and for Aubrey's "yes."
The reason we are able to hire for this position is not because we suddenly have more money than we did before. The budget remains the same, but the vestry and I have decided, with the agreement of the continuing staff, to deploy our budgeted staffing hours differently. Aubrey will be taking about half of the hours previously allocated to the full-time position of River Room Coordinator/Administrative Assistant. We are intentionally stepping out into mission first, with the full awareness that it leaves us shorthanded on the administrative end. In the long term, this level of administrative staffing will not be sustainable for a church as active as we are.
We are deeply hopeful about our plans to staff the River Room in a way that may leave some budget room for more administrative help. But really, we're able to put this direct mission work first because of trust in God and trust in you. We're going to put mission first and trust God and the people of Saint Paul's to provide the means to make it work.
I am aware of a military/business-speak cliche that goes something like, "Hope is not a plan/strategy." In some contexts, I'm sure that's a useful thought. But in our context: nonsense. If our "business" is resurrection, hope and trust are the only strategies worth pursuing.

Sunday Forum
The Epistle of James, led by Fr. Biddy
Sundays, 9:30 AM, The Berlin Room
Martin Luther famously called the Epistle of James an “epistle of straw” and put it in an appendix to his translation of the Bible. The book has often been overlooked and denigrated since. And yet of all the letters in the New Testament, it may be the closest to the content of Jesus’ teaching ministry. We’ll read it carefully to start the program year, using the most recent scholarship on James to understand it and apply it to our lives today.
