THE LIFE IN

JEWISH SENIOR LIFE

by Jo Strausz Rosen

Nestled among the green spaces and wetlands of West Bloomfield, Meer Independent Living Apartments are a haven for those older adults who have spent full lives in pursuit of knowledge and Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. At Jewish Senior Life, the often-busy days pass in punctuated rhythms of activity. Meer is a place where residents are empowered to share their expertise and experiences with others.

Shirley Benyas, 97, performed and acted at local theaters, including the Fisher, Michigan Opera Theatre, and the Attic to name a few. She has retained her SAG membership. Shirley sang opera with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and taught music in the Detroit Public Schools for 31 years. She has been able to continue her love for theatre and Yiddish by teaching a Yiddish class and directing the Reader’s Theatre, composed of residents who act out scenes from an assortment of plays by famous playwrights like Neil Simon.

Lives Well Lived: Still Laughing After All These Years

Get ready to have fun for a good cause! This year’s Lives Well Lived (LWL) event will feature comedian Al Lubel. Al Lubel has been featured many times on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and with Jay Leno, as well as on the David Letterman Show. He tours nationally and is just a very, very funny man. About Al, Jerry Seinfeld said, “Al Lubel has one of the funniest jokes I have ever heard.” But don’t take it from me (or Jerry). Come on out on Sunday, November 17 at 2:00pm at Adat Shalom Synagogue for an afternoon of laughs to FRIENDS of Jewish Senior Life.

Our Lives Well Lived sponsors help us bring so many special opportunities to our residents – we hope you’ll help out. Sponsorships for Lives Well Lived are still available. Please call me or visit https://jslmi.org/events/jsls-lives-well-lived/ for information or to become a sponsor. Tickets are also available on the website.

The long-term goal is to do it every Sunday at all our residences, so if you or someone you know is interested in hanging out with us, please call me or shoot me an email. The more the merrier! You are the secret sauce that makes Jewish Senior Life special!

Whatever day you have some free time on your hands, we invite you to join us on a JSL campus, enriching the lives of our residents. Check out all the opportunities at  https://jslmi.org/volunteer/

Feel free to call me with any questions.

Rosh Hashanah

Sharing the holidays with residents is one of the great joys of Jewish Senior Life. We’re looking for a volunteer who can lead a short service (materials are provided) at Coville in Oak Park at 4pm on Friday, October 4, the second day of Rosh Hashanah.

Need Cooks!

Or at least ace sandwich makers. We’re looking for a few good people who can roll up the delicious sandwiches Marvin’s Bistro’s and Krohlik’s Café’s customers love, and who enjoy shmoozing with our customers – every penny helps Jewish Senior Life! Not a cook? No worries – we also need a few cashiers.

Visitors, Arts and Crafts, Games

We are looking for people of any age who would like to come and visit our residents in both Oak Park and West Bloomfield.

The High Holidays are coming soon and the boutique has cards and gifts to start 5785 off right! Whether you need a new honey dish or a hostess gift, come check out our gifts and Judaica.

And while you’re there, check out the spring/summer sale items. Stock up or treat yourself to something special for 25% off!

The King is in the Field -

Don’t You Want to See Him Now

The above analogy describes the mode of a Jew during this Hebrew month of Elul, the month preceding the High Holidays. It suggests a unique opportunity to reach closer to our Creator. G-d, The King makes Himself more accessible to us during this time. This invitation should encourage us to show more interest, more devotion and more passion to G-d and to His desires.

At the very beginning of Covid (just before Passover 2020), this idea very much resonated with me -  “The King is in the field” and this feeling continues to intensify in my life.

Many will agree that Covid brought in its wake a litany of other global instabilities and troubles such as war, fear and confusion. During these four years, some have chosen to flex their muscles and strongly voice their political stand while others have become far less patient and less tolerant. Some have chosen to follow the media while others have simply become downcast and disappointed with our fellow human beings.

I believe that all year long we would benefit from feeling “The King is in the field”. We would gain by placing G-d and spirituality on the hierarchy of our life’s “attractions.” To approach G-d and to bask in His Divine Presence, means to find the promise of peace and reassurance, clarity and trusted company.

Let us rethink what might be the message to us today from all the recent unparalleled peril, strife and frustration looming over us wherever we may be. Could it be that G-d is longing for us to enhance our deep relationship with Him? Let us defy our global troubles and instead reflect on the possibility that G-d may be longing to once again enjoy private time and space with each and every one of us.

This is a most suitable time to increase our good deeds and visit the King Who is waiting for us in the field.

As we prepare to stand raptured in prayer on the High Holidays, let us remember that every day of the year we are to feel, “the King is in the field” and strive to connect with our Creator who longs to hear from us.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
