Sanctuary Snapshot | November 2024

Giving Tuesday is December 3rd - Be sure to join us!

This year, we’re not only raising the critical funds needed to keep our sanctuary doors open, but we’re also focusing on giving back AND spreading compassion.

Our goal is to raise $30,000 to sustain Heartland’s three core programs: rescuing and caring for farm animals in need, teaching children empathy and kindness through humane education, and providing healing therapy programs for young people.

What’s new this year? Each time we hit a fundraising milestone throughout the day, we’ll pause to announce an opportunity for you to get involved and help spread kindness in our community—for the animals at Heartland, for the young people we serve, our volunteers, and beyond.

For example, once we announce we’ve reached $3,000, the next five donors will receive an exclusive encouragement card pack featuring our rescued residents to share kindness with friends and family. (Think about the neighbor who could use a little cheer, an aunt who loves handwritten notes, or a friend who needs a pick-me-up!)

And that’s just one example — we’ll have fun ways to engage with us throughout the day. Tune in and join the fun!

We can’t wait to celebrate with you on Tuesday, December 3rd—let’s spread compassion throughout our community and beyond.

A tribute to Popcorn, our sweet marshmallow rooster

We're so sorry to share the news that our magnificent rescued rooster, Popcorn, has passed away.

After our staff noticed Popcorn wasn't feeling himself, he was taken to the vet clinic for an urgent exam and x-ray, which showed some type of cancer/infection, most likely lymphoma or leukemia. We tried medication to address any infection, but were told this wouldn't affect his prognosis, and that dear Popcorn was near the end of his life.

We took Popcorn back home and made him a cozy, quiet space in front of the main barn. He got to spend his remaining days soaking up snacks, love and quiet affection from his most trusted friends and caretakers. We monitored Popcorn closely, and helped him pass peacefully once he lost his appetite and the energy to keep going.

Popcorn (along with his best bud, Tofu, who sadly passed away in the summer of 2023) were rescued from the annual Kaporos rituals in 2017. Popcorn's kind and affectionate nature made him the ultimate cuddle buddy who loved nothing more than to be by your side (or on your lap!) while you read him a story. He also enjoyed soaking up the individual attention from our community, including stroller rides around the sanctuary courtesy of our volunteers and therapy participants. Darling Popcorn will be dearly missed by so many people in our community.

Don't forget to shop small (and with heart) this season ♥️

Volunteer Spotlight: Say hello to positive and patient Paul

Paul and his late wife had been longtime HFS supporters before Paul started volunteering. Once he retired this past summer, Paul joined the crew as an invaluable facilities volunteer. He is part of what we affectionately call “The

Beatles” since Georg is our other skilled repair and light construction volunteer. :)

Paul accomplishes so much each week – from fixing the washing machine to the tractor, mower, kitchen heaters and so much more. We are incredibly grateful for his immediate and ongoing impact to help things run and work more smoothly at Heartland. Read more about Paul and all of the incredible ways he helps out animals in our community.
