December 2024. Great Art Inspired by Water. | |
Annual Theme: Rising Tides
The Minnesota Marine Art Museum presents the 2025 exhibition theme Rising Tides, inviting visitors to explore humanity’s intricate relationship with water through a series of groundbreaking exhibitions. From Edward Burtynsky’s abstract aerial photographs in Water, to Alexis Rockman’s monumental paintings of oceanic transformation in Oceanus, and Shelly Mosman’s striking, water-inspired portraits in Currents, each show reveals water as a source of life, a cultural force, and a vanishing resource. Erik Jon Olson’s Waste Not and Michael Kareken’s Ebb and Flow reimagine discarded materials, offering powerful commentary on sustainability and renewal.
Additionally, the 2025 literary arts exhibition, Once Upon a Shore, curated by Ojibwe writer Heid Erdrich, weaves Indigenous narratives of rivers and lakes with multidisciplinary artistry, while Spectacle in Motion: The Grand Panorama of a Whaling Voyage ‘Round the World immerses visitors in the 19th-century spectacle of maritime storytelling with a 1,275-foot long and 8-foot high panoramic painting. Anchoring the year is Fluid: What is Marine Art, and What Can it Be?, which juxtaposes historic and contemporary works, expanding our perception of marine art. Through Rising Tides, we invite you to reflect on water’s essential yet imperiled role in our lives and our shared future.

Friday, December 6, 2024 | New Orleans, LA
10a-1:15p | Tulane River and Coastal Center
[virtual attendance available]
2p-3:30p | Amistad Research Center
[onsite attendance only]
With support from the Terra Foundation for American Art, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum is co-hosting a series of national convenings, bringing together artists, writers, curators, scholars, community organizers, and art professionals at critical waterways in the United States. These convenings will further discussion, knowledge sharing, and cultivating networks to address new and emerging scholarship, curatorial practices, and artistic expression that centers Indigenous and Black voices within the marine art and maritime genre. Our first stop? The Gulf South.
The convenings are inspired by the themes explored in the Minnesota Marine Art Museum’s groundbreaking exhibition, currently on view at MMAM through March 2, 2025, A Nation Takes Place. Co-curators of the exhibition, Tia-Simone Gardner and Shana M. griffin, will introduce audiences to the core ideas behind A Nation Takes Place, the artists and their artwork featured in the exhibition, and highlight the work that is happening in the Gulf South region.
