Dear Farm Friends,

Even in winter, things are busy in our greenhouse! We've been seeding trays of broccoli and lettuce using our vacuum seeder.

Check out this Video of our talented greenhouse manager, Aspen, in action!

We're also running a little germination experiment: some of our lettuce and leek trays are topped with vermiculite—an organic, naturally occurring mineral that helps retain moisture and improve seed germination—while others are topped with soil. We’re excited to see how they compare!

Meanwhile, our crew has been mixing up fresh batches of potting soil with organic amendments, using the classic tarp method.

Stay tuned for more updates as these little seedlings grow!

This also seems like an important time to remind our members that their veggies get their start in what might be the only greenhouse in the country to have a *Disco Ball* as ceiling decor. Not sure how to test the success rate of disco, however.

Enjoy your shares this week!

Bread Share CSA

Provided by Deer Creek Bakehouse Nevada City

Our new CSA Bread Share is a year round, weekly delivery of Country Sourdough Bread from Deer Creek Bakehouse in Nevada City.

Based in Nevada City, Deer Creek Bakehouse crafts rustic, naturally-leavened breads with an emphasis on whole grains, long, slow fermentation, and a bold bake to bring out the best character in every loaf. The Country Sourdough is their flagship loaf. It’s a great work horse sourdough, and pairs well with just about anything. All loaves are hand made with 100% organic flours, much of which is locally milled.

You have probably tried their bread local restaurants such as Lola (The National Hotel), Restaurant Dakan, The Stonehouse, Brewbilt Brewhaus, and more!

Each week or bi-weekly, you will receive a loaf of freshly baked bread, delivered to your convenient CSA pickup location. This subscription is limited to 50 members, so be sure to grab a spot soon!

Recipes (including a "use it up" section for last week's leftovers), storage tips and inspiration:

  • This Winter Radicchio Salad (click here) is the perfect way to use your Raddichio! If you are a Fruit Share subscriber, you can also use up some oranges and avocados in this recipe. This bright salad will be perfect for the pleasant weather this week!

  • Serve your family these Kohlrabi Fries (click here) as a fun and healthy snack or side! Although they won’t be as crispy as normal fries, they are still a delicious dippable alternative.

  • Despite its name, Broccoli Raab is more closely related to turnips than it is broccoli. You’ll want to treat it like you would other bitter greens, by blanching, roasting, and pairing with salt and acid. Once prepared, this vitamin packed veggie is delicious! Try this Mediterranean Broccoli Raab Recipe (click here.)

"USE IT UP" WEEKLY RECIPE!

If you have your cauliflower leftover from last week, try making your own Cauliflower Rice (Click here).

You can use that "rice" to make a Cauliflower Rice Stir Fry Bowl (Click here), with whatever else you have left in your fridge as well in this week's box. Be sure to shave some of this week's kohlrabi on top of it for a double helping of immunity boosting nutrients (because everyone seems to be a little sick these days).
