“To Kill a Man”

Rev. Michael J. S. Carter

Now Michael Servetus was not the first to be executed for questioning the trinity and he would not be the last. Ferenz David, (known here in the West as Francis David) a great leader of the Transylvanian Unitarian Church, was martyred in 1579 for his anti-trinitarian views and died in prison. But Servetus' death was a pivotal turning point in our tradition and left a deep scar. We as UU have always been cautious ever since of dogmas and policies which ignore the impact they have on the lives of other human beings. Note the UU response to Moral Mondays for example and other social justice causes and movements. In short, to kill a man is not a doctrine. It is murder. Pure and simple. This morning, let us remember our brother Michael Servetus, who gave his life (or more truthfully, had his life taken) for what he believed.
