When the new Federation Israel Emissary first arrived in September, his goal was to meet as many community members as possible. This week, Amit Swisa made good on his promise with three different "Israel IRL" events that promoted dialogue and educated our community about Israel.

On Friday, Amit shared his personal story of October 7th at Congregation Beth El-Norwalk.

On Sunday, over 50 people gathered at TCS in Westport for The Green Prince, the first film in the new series, "Frames of Conflict: Understanding Israel and Palestine through Films." Moderated by Amit, the screening and conversation focused on the true story of Mosab Hassan Yousef, son of a Hamas leader, who secretly worked as an informant for Israel's Shin Bat. Save the date - March 23rd - for the next film in the series, which will highlight the Israeli perspective on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Finally, on Tuesday, Amit hosted a lunch and learn on current events in Israel and our community at Congregation B'nai Israel in Bridgeport.

Be sure to catch Amit's next presentation on January 30th - "Israel: A Light Unto the Nations," which will explore Israel's innovation and values and their global impact.

Help the Victims of the Fires in Southern California

The wildfires in the Los Angeles region have displaced hundreds of thousands, caused enormous suffering, and claimed many lives. Jewish facilities, including a 100-year-old synagogue, are among those buildings already damaged or destroyed. Jewish Federations in Los Angeles, Ventura County, and San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys have opened a Wildfire Relief Fund.

In response to the devastating fires impacting Los Angeles, the Jewish community has mobilized to provide essential resources, including mental-health support, warm meals, shelter, and space for displaced individuals, families, and institutions. To help its community during this tragic time, Jewish Federation of Los Angeles has created a Wildfire Crisis Relief Fund to support its neighbors affected by this catastrophic event. Your help is urgently needed; 100% of your gift will go directly to those who need it most.

Local Community Member Honored for Jewish Advocacy

A huge shoutout to Traci Greenberg for being one of the nationally recognized winners of the Jewish Education Project’s Shine A Light on Antisemitism Civic Courage Award for 2024. Traci is the only elementary school educator in the United States to win this year’s award! This award recognizes educators and students from across America who take meaningful action against antisemitism through education, activism, or creative expression.

Traci, an elementary school teacher from Connecticut, has gone above and beyond to combat antisemitism in our community. Following increased antisemitic incidents, she recognized the need to gather in person and online. Traci spearheaded initiatives such as the town’s first menorah lighting and a “We Will Dance Again” unity event. She also advocates and organizes to respond to antisemitic controversies and incidents in her town. With her husband, Rabbi Jason Greenberg of Temple Shalom in Norwalk, Traci performs in a Jewish-themed puppet show that fosters understanding and joy among children and adults alike.

Lifting our community and using her voice for change, Traci is a shining example of the positive impact one person can make.

Jewish Federations welcome news of a deal to release dozens of hostages, create a framework for releasing all the hostages, and allow Israel a path forward to protect the safety and security of its citizens.

Every day for over 15 months, our community has held the hostages in our hearts, wept for their plight, prayed for their safe return, and mourned for those we have lost.

We've held close our Israeli brothers and sisters who have suffered, been displaced, fought in the IDF reserves, struggled to keep their businesses afloat, and worked to keep their families and communities alive.

There is much work to be done and significant uncertainty ahead, but we are hopeful that the first phase of this agreement will pave the way for the remaining hostages to be reunited with their families, for hostilities to end, and for an era of security and rebuilding for both Israel and her neighbors.

We must also thank President Biden and President-elect Trump for their unprecedented coordination to bring both sides together to get a deal done.

Join us tomorrow for a critical briefing on the implications of the ceasefire agreement. We invite you to be part of this important discussion.
