Bible Reading Plan
This week we have covered a lot of ground in our reading plan: from the giving of the Ten Commandments (and other laws) at Sinai, to instructions about crafting the Tabernacle and its accoutrements, to the details of the clothes that the priests should wear. I am a visual person, and I have trouble imagining things that I cannot actually see. I had to listen to yesterday's reading twice in order to get the details of the Tabernacle, and after a certain point, my mind just got lost in all those details.
One aspect of our reading that stood out to me is that God does not miraculously provide the Ark of the Covenant or the Lampstand, the Tabernacle itself, or the clothing for the priests. He does not fashion them himself and have them appear for Israelite use. Instead, he asks his people to provide the materials - from the metal, to the wood, to the goat skins, to the dye used for the Tabernacle curtains - and gives them instructions on how to construct all of these things. Whether people give some material thing toward the process or actually use their God-given talents in the construction, they are giving of themselves to God. (We'll see this theme continue in more detail in the next few chapters.) In my mind, it's almost like the Abrahamic covenant - which has been passed down from generation to generation to generation for hundreds of years - is being acted out in real life. God and his people are all giving of themselves, in relationship to one another, so that they can continue to live in relationship for the rest of their lives. I would love to hear your thoughts!
