Sacred Fire at Agnes Benidickson Field

at 1:15 pm on September 30, 2024

Every September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a federal statutory day honouring Indigenous people, communities, and survivors of Canada’s residential school system.

The Queen’s community is invited to join a sacred fire on September 30 at the Agnes Benidickson Field to reflect on the harm brought to Indigenous Peoples by the residential school system. This is also a time to understand our collective role in advancing Truth and Reconciliation, not just at Queen’s, but across Canada.

Queen’s University is honouring the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation from September 23 – October 12.

Fire Safety in Residence: What You Need to Know and Do

Thank you for your cooperation this morning during the fire drills. The Fire Safety Coordinator was pleased with the speed of the evacuations and your compliance.

Here are some key points to keep in mind about fire and life safety:

  • Take all alarms seriously and always evacuate as quickly as possible. Move away from the building to make way for emergency services and meet your floor at your muster point.
  • When the alarm sounds, exit the building using the nearest available stairwell. Elevators are not operational during a fire alarm.
  • Let us know if the alarm in your room did not sound this morning by completing a Maintenance Request Order on the Student Residence and Dining Portal

You can help reduce the likelihood of fire alarms being set off by following these guidelines:

  • Use small appliances like a kettle, toaster, rice cooker, etc. in a common room kitchen.
  • Watch your food! Do not leave the microwave or other cooking devices unattended.
  • Exit signs, smoke detectors and ceiling tiles are part of the fire and life safety system in your building. These are all critical pieces to keeping residents and staff safe.

See Section 3.15 of the Residence Contract for more detail on fire and life safety in Residence.
