JANUARY 2025

Hello, organizing clients and friends!

Happy new year, everyone! Warm wishes for peace and ease in 2025.

In this issue: 'before & after' photos from recent jobs as examples what can be accomplished in a single 4-hour organizing session.

Art room 'before & after'

This client needed both space to design, build, sew, and paint -- and to have all of their art supplies clearly visible.

In our 4-hour session, the client and I sorted, categorized, and decluttered all of their materials, tools, current projects, and completed works. The client recycled and tossed what was unusable plus donated several boxes of supplies to Seattle ReCreative. (Part of my service is taking a carload per session of clients' donations and tricky-to-recycle items.)

For storage, we used existing shelving plus repurposed a rolling cart of drawers. The cart was previously stored out of sight plus it was frustrating to use. So we discarded the cart's frame and instead used its wire mesh drawers as open storage on the work tables.

By the end of the session, the client had lots of work space, their materials and tools visible, and their completed works both displayed and safely stored.

Home office 'before & after'

This client wanted both to display her wonderful collections of books, plants, art, and keepsakes -- and to have a usable office.

In our 4-hour session, the client and I cleared out her office and (not pictured) the office closet and her walk-in clothes closet. As we went sorted, categorized, and reviewed every item, she decided to donate some items and also chose some keepsakes to store away, so her displays now reflect her current aesthetic.

Note her effective use of vertical space: because her displays are in tall bookshelves and hung on walls, the visual focus of the room is pulled up and around the whole space. The room is full of items but still feels open and airy.

By the end of the session, the client had a functional, professional work space that still felt warm, personalized, and inspirational.

Clothes closet 'before & after'

This client wanted to be able to easily access and manage her wardrobe -- without the space feeling crowded or overwhelming.

In our 4-hour session, the client and I sorted, categorized, and decluttered her and her husband's wardrobes. We then organized their hanging clothes by frequency of use, category, and color. This way, everyday clothes are visible and accessible, and infrequently-worn items are tucked in the back corner.

This client often consigns clothes through ThredUp. I like this online consignment service as it's easy to use. For a small fee ThredUp sends you a big bag with prepaid postage. You fill the bag, send it off, and they photograph, list, sell, and ship your items for you.

By the end of the session, the client's closet was easy to navigate, had more room to move around freely, and looked like a lovely little boutique.

This client wanted both a serene bedroom -- and also to store her collections of accessories and toiletries in open shelving.

In our 4-hour session, the client and I organized both the primary bedroom and (not pictured) a bathroom plus a storage closet. We repurposed beautiful boxes as specific 'homes' for categories of items and I suggested adding inexpensive mirrored trays to display her perfume collection.

When there are lots of little items and little pieces of furniture crowding a room, the visual focus feels heavy and is pulled downward. In this space, after we sorted, decluttered, and found containers for categories of items, the visual focus became the sculptural furniture and fabulous views.

The next step for this client is to hang art on the walls to further pull the visual focus upwards and to personalize the space. (I recommend hiring NW Art Installation to place and hang your art for you.)

By the end of the session, the bedroom felt calm and open, and the client could easily located each category of accessories.
