OCTOBER HAPPENINGS

Dear Friends,

Somone entered the shop the other day and commented that walking down our pathway was like strolling in an autumnal wonderland! Just as local farmers are saying goodbye to tomatoes and corn and hello to squashes and apples, our sunflowers and hydrangeas are fading but our chrysanthemums, asters, and pumpkins are taking center stage! The past month has been stunningly beautiful and whether you are a gardener, hiker, cyclist, paddler, or star gazer, we hope you have been able to enjoy these glory days of early fall.

Noteworthy this month:

  • Perennials, Shrubs, & Trees are 25% off until Nov. 1
  • Spring Bulbs just arrived!
  • Cousins Maine Lobster Food Truck will be here Sunday Oct. 6, 11-6

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Mon-Sat 10:00-6:00, Sunday 10:00-5:30

(Note we are changing to our fall/winter hours this week, opening at 10AM rather than 9AM)

Emily and The Team at East Branch Organics

Perennials, Shrubs, & Trees on Sale!

All of our perennials, shrubs, and trees are 25% off until November 1! We still have lots of lovely plants like this delicate rose which continues to bloom in late September. Early Fall is a terrific season for planting as there is still time for roots to get established, but we are less likely to have scorching hot weather that can stress new plants.

Mums, Asters, & Pumpkins!!

We have beautiful Mums and Asters in stock, as well as ornamental kale and cabbage, corn stalks, hay bales, and of course PUMPKINS from Rulfs Orchard in Peru!

Spring Bulbs!

Our Spring bulbs just arrived! It's time to get out there and plant your daffodils, crocuses, hyacinths, and tulips!

Meet Joe!

We are so lucky to have Joe with us for the "shoulder season" this year! Joe joined us after Ellie and Aiden left for their fall semesters at college, and he will be here until mid-October. Joe grew up in Albany, and he has been coming to Keene Valley with his wife and in-laws for close to 30 years. Until recently Joe was a 7th grade English teacher in Cohoes, and he is now enjoying a career change (we are the lucky short-term beneficiaries!). Once mid-October hits, Joe and his wife will be heading out to Bend, Oregon, in search of new adventures! When not watering and tending to all of our plants, solving our tech issues, and making excellent beer recommendations, you are likely to see Joe running along Route 73 training for an upcoming event. As an endurance athlete, Joe has competed in 7 Lake Placid Ironmen, many marathons, and he is, of course, a 46er as well! We are so lucky to have you here, Joe!

What's New in the Wine & Spirits Shop?

Below we are highlighting some of the newest wines in the shop that we poured at our Saturday tasting!

Tenimenti Leone D

Sciccheria Lazio Bianco

Tenimenti Leone is located in the Castelli Romani, a hilly region with volcanic origins south-east of Rome. Schiccheria is an Italian term that it is a play on the word "chic"-- simple yet elegant. Schiccheria is made from Bellone and Verdicchio--two grapes native to central Italy--and their vineyards are certified organic in the EU. It is citrusy with a touch of smoke on the nose. Sciccherria is perfect for these fall days when we are trying to extend the summer vibe!

Von Winning

Estate Riesling Trocken

Von Winning produces some of the best dry Rieslings in Germany, and this entry level Trocken (dry) Riesling is just delicious. Not nearly as sweet as what you might expect in a typical Riesling, this trocken is lovely as an apertif, but the acidity makes it a perfect food wine as well, especially with spicy food like Indian or Thai cuisine. If you think you don't like Rieslings, try this one!

Sottimano

Mate Dry Brachetto

This is a lovely and light dry Brachetto made with organically grown grapes in the Barbaresco region of Piedmont, Italy. It has bright red fruit and rose petal on the nose, and a hint of cracked pepper and on the palate. A fantastic Thanksgiving red--and our favorite every day red right now!

Shop Wine & Spirits

How Do We Choose New Wines for the Shop?

We choose new wines by tasting them, of course! Sometimes we travel to portfolio tastings, sometimes distributors ship us bottles to sample, and sometimes we set up visits here at East Branch. Recently we had visits with representatives from two of our favorite distributors: Leah Rinaldi from Jenny & Francois, and Dan George from T. Edward Wines. We taste and taste and taste....and we usually find some winners! We are always looking for wines that are made well with respect for the land and that reflect a region and its terroir. We love a wine with an interesting story about the winemaker (there are some wonderful characters out there!). But most importantly the wine must taste delicious!

What's New in the Craft Beer Center?

We have plenty of Oktoberfest beers on the shelves, including this malt forward amber ale from one of our very favorite local breweries: Hex & Hop. Come get into the fall sprit!

Cousins Maine Lobster Food Truck

Sunday, October 6, 11-6

Cousins is coming back! Last time, my favorites were both styles of lobster rolls, lobster tacos, and the lobster quesadilla. What about you?! Once again, we will be serving wine and beer by the glass. Don't forget that you can go to their website and order ahead of time rather than standing in line.
