October is Library Month

Join the Celebration

October is Canadian Library Month and October 20 to 26 is Ontario Public Library Week. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate public libraries and their important role in our communities. Mayor Lisa Post, along with Sheri Marks, Library Board Chair, will officially proclaim October National Public Library Month at a public event at Town Hall on October 23, at 12 p.m.

There is always something new at the library so stop by to discover all that your library offers. Our vision is that the library will be a place for everyone to connect and discover, where learning and possibility allow each member to soar! And yes, the popular Orangeville Public Library book bags will be available during Library Week at both branches.

Five children with heads together and text Social Justice Club

Social Justice Club - Wednesdays

Do you have a child that loves helping others and the environment? The Social Justice Club (SJC) is for children and youth passionate about making the world a better place. Through discussion and hands on activities, children learn about the bigger issues facing our society (examples include poverty, bullying, inequity, environmental concerns) and how small actions like helping others and caring for the environment can make a difference. Every week children learn new concepts and then discuss them in the context of school, home, and community. Some of the concepts they will learn include empathy, honesty, independent thinking, equality vs. equity, personal and societal justice, consultation and more.

Oh, and did we mention, the club is run by youth for youth? That means youth help plan and facilitate every session. If you know a teenager 15+ who would like to earn their community service hours with us, have them contact teens@orangeville.ca

SJC runs for seven weeks (Wednesdays, October 9 to November 20) and children are encouraged to attend weekly, as each session will build on the knowledge gained previously.
