Make a Difference in a Child’s Life: Western Youth Network’s Mentoring Program Needs Volunteers.
January is National Mentoring Month—a time to celebrate the transformative power of mentorship and to call on our community to take action. At Western Youth Network’s (WYN) Mentoring Program, the need for volunteer mentors is urgent. With a waitlist of children in need and a shortage of mentors in Watauga, Ashe and Avery Counties, now is the time to step up and make a difference.
Statistics show that mentoring works. Children with a mentor are more likely to perform better in school, avoid risky behaviors, and build positive relationships. These benefits extend beyond the individual child, strengthening families, schools, and communities.
WYN offers two mentoring options to suit your interests and availability:
- Community-based mentoring involves meeting with a child outside of school to explore shared interests and activities.
- School-based mentoring takes place at school, focusing on building connections within the school environment.
No experience is required to become a mentor—just a positive attitude, a caring heart, and a willingness to be a friend. WYN provides comprehensive training and ongoing support to ensure every mentor feels prepared and valued.
