Celebrate Sunday Mass at St. Alphonsus!

Hello St. Alphonsus,

In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus performs his first sign at a wedding feast in Cana.

Marriage and wedding feasts are metaphors used in Scripture to describe God's salvation and the Kingdom of God. Here at the beginning of Jesus' public ministry, John's Gospel seeks to establish that Jesus is going to re-interpret and fulfill Yahweh's promise to Israel. Asked to do something to address the awkward situation that the absence of wine at a wedding feast would create, Jesus' miracle produces vast quantities of wine—six jars holding thirty gallons each are filled to overflowing with choice wine.

This lavish response to a simple human need is a vision for us of the abundance of God's kingdom. It challenges us to respond generously when confronted with human need today. We respond as best we can, fully confident that God can transform our efforts, bringing the Kingdom of God to fulfillment among us.

Daily prayer keeps you in good relationship with the LORD, and yourself.

Living the Gospel of Life!

All the faithful are invited to join Bishop Bartosic, St. Alphonsus pastor Rev. Steven Bauer, and more throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago for a 12 Hours For Life prayer vigil at St. Mary of the Angels, 1850 N. Hermitage, from 7 PM to 6 AM from January 23 until 6 AM Mass on the morning of Friday, January 24. Contact Ray Pingoy for more information.

Please join our pastor, Fr. Bauer, and some fellow parishioners for an hour of prayer for life as we will be covering the Midnight to 1 AM time slot. The scriptural passage that will be guiding and weaving through this overnight prayer vigil is 1Corinthians 13:4-8, from St. Paul's great explication of love. Each hour will focus on a different phrase from that famous Bible passage. The line for our specific hour is "love does not brood over injury," and we will be praying that forgiveness,  conversion of heart, and mercy be poured out on all those who have been involved with or affected by the abortion industry, that in and through Christ, they may come to seek eternal happiness.

9 Days for Life is a novena for the protection of human life. Get daily prayers, reflections, and more by email or text message January 16-24.

Project Rachel is a ministry of the Catholic Church in the U.S. to those who have been involved in abortion. It is a diocesan-based network of specially trained priests, religious, counselors, and laypersons who provide a team response of care for those suffering in the aftermath of abortion. In addition to referring for Sacramental Reconciliation, the ministry provides an integrated network of services, including pastoral counseling, support groups, retreats and referrals to licensed mental health professionals.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Each year, Christians around the world mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity from January 18-25. This annual observance is a special time to pray for unity among all Jesus’ disciples so that the world might come to believe in Christ’s redeeming love (see John 17:21). Organized in collaboration with the Vatican, the theme for this year is Do you believe? (Jn. 11:26). Jesus announces the truth of the new Covenant to Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, even if they die, will live. Those that believe in me will never die.” He invites a response from Martha when he says, “Do you believe this?” Resources to prepare for and offer ecumenical prayer services, from the Graymoor Ecumenical and Interreligious Institute, can be found here.
