Point-in-Time Event Hosted by Central UMC

January 25, 2025, South Lawn

The Point-in-Time (PIT) Count is an annual effort to measure the number of people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. Conducted nationwide, the PIT count provides critical data about sheltered and unsheltered individuals, offering a snapshot of the scale and demographics of homelessness in our community. For New Mexico, the PIT Count is especially significant, given our state's unique challenges, including rural areas, Native American communities, and a higher-than-average poverty rate. The data gathered informs federal funding allocation, local policy decisions and helps state and local organizations identify trends , and advocate for solutions tailored to New Mexico’s cultural and geographic landscape. Community members contribute to a deeper understanding of homelessness by participating in the PIT Count and help drive meaningful action toward reducing it across the state.

Central has the opportunity to host a magnet event for the PIT Count by hosting a Resource Fair. Nearly 20 different service organizations will join us to tell folks about their services, and it will be an opportunity for folks to participate in the street census. Magnet events help illuminate and give even more depth to the PIT Count. Ultimately, the PIT Count is not just about numbers but about visibility and the commitment to ensuring that no one is left without a path to stability and support.

A Prayer

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

O God, we thank you for the lives of great saints and prophets in the past, who have revealed to us that we can stand up amid the problems and difficulties and trials of life and not give in. We thank you for our foreparents, who've given us something in the midst of the darkness of exploitation and oppression to keep going. Grant that we will go on with the proper faith and the proper determination of will, so that we will be able to make a creative contribution to this world.

In the name and spirit of Jesus we pray. Amen.
