December Athletic Director Update

St. Thomas Aquinas Athletics is excited to kick off an action-packed few months for our student-athletes. Winter sports are officially underway, and we are ready for a season full of competition, growth, and school spirit. We are especially thrilled to welcome back Chris and Perry Plummer, who will be coaching our Boys’ Ice Hockey team. Their leadership, dedication, and experience will be invaluable as they guide the team toward success this season.

We are also excited to announce Maria Hendrickson as the new Head Coach for our Girls’ Ice Hockey team. Maria brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep passion for the game, and we are confident she will inspire our athletes to reach new heights both on and off the ice.

Our winter sports teams, including Swimming, Indoor Track, Skiing, Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball, and both Boys’ and Girls’ Ice Hockey, are all in full swing. We are proud of the hard work and commitment displayed by all our athletes, and we can’t wait to see what they accomplish this season.

Be sure to follow our athletic social media channels from December 26-28 for live updates as the Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball teams compete in the Oyster River Christmas Tournament, and the Boys’ Ice Hockey team takes part in the Oyster River Tournament at UNH.

This is truly a special time of year, and we wish everyone a joyous holiday season. As we look back on a memorable 2024, we are excited for a fantastic 2025 ahead!

Boys Basketball Raises Money for Families in Need at Christmas

The St. Thomas Aquinas Boys Basketball program, including the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Reserve teams, are proud to dedicate a day of their usual coffee runs from Starbucks, Aroma Joes, Dunkin' Donuts, and other favorites, to help support families in need this holiday season. The funds raised from this initiative, along with contributions from a donation jar at the first home game, will be donated to a local church, assisting families in purchasing groceries for Christmas. Now, in its third year, this heartwarming tradition has also received support from other athletic teams, reinforcing the spirit of giving in the Saints community.

Girls Soccer Honored by Mayor Bob Carrier with a Proclamation

At the Dover Select Board meeting on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, Mayor Bob Carrier honored the St. Thomas Aquinas Girls Soccer team for their outstanding achievement as 2024 State Champions. The Select Board recognized the team's dedication, skill, and perseverance throughout their championship season. Mayor Carrier presented the team with a proclamation, acknowledging their hard work and success. The ceremony highlighted the team's accomplishment and celebrated their contribution to Dover's sports community.

Get to Know the Man Behind the Wheel – Jim Hathorne

James Hathorne has been a beloved fixture at St. Thomas Aquinas High School (STA) in Dover, NH, for over 20 years. Serving as a bus driver, assistant golf coach, Facilities, and mentor to countless students, Jim has made a lasting impact on the STA community. Born in Haverhill, MA, into a military family, Jim's father, James, and mother, Pauline, moved their family across the country and abroad, including South Carolina, California, Japan, and New Hampshire. Jim has one brother and one sister, with his brother once a candidate for the prestigious Senior Non-Commissioned Officer of the Air Force Academy.

Jim’s family history adds another layer to his unique background. He is related to Judge John Hathorne, who presided over the Salem Witch Trials, and distantly to the famous author Nathaniel Hawthorne, who added the “w” to the family name during his college years.

At STA, Jim has been much more than just a bus driver and coach. He has served as a chaperone, role model, and advisor to students over the years. His involvement extends beyond the classroom and athletic fields—he also worked part-time at St. Anselm College and Wentworth Hotel as a banquet manager, retiring from both positions in 2020. However, Jim is still actively working at STA, where his dedication to the students and the school remains unwavering.

A passionate golfer, Jim is a strong believer in the power of community. “I love St. Thomas Aquinas. It is a true community, with kids and teachers from different backgrounds coming together to make this place special and alive,” he says. Jim enjoys watching students from diverse regional backgrounds interact and stay connected even after graduation.

Athletic Director David Morissette speaks highly of Jim’s impact at STA: “Jim is just an unsung hero. He loves this community and what we are about. He would do anything for anyone here at STA, and the students always come first. What a man and what a legacy.” Jim's humility, dedication to others, and love for STA have made him an irreplaceable part of the school community.

St. Thomas Aquinas has been very lucky to have this man be a part of our community for the past 20 years and hopefully many more. Job well done Jim.

Christmas Traditions

St. Thomas Aquinas reached out to Faculty-Staff members who have a son or daughter playing athletics to share their favorite Christmas/Holiday family Tradition. Here is what they had to say:

Paul Marquis (STA President) and daughter Quinn (Senior)

The Marquis family has a few traditions to share:

Quinn and her cousins, on both sides of the family, always participate in a secret Santa. All the cousins pick names at Thanksgiving time when we are together and then get gifts for each other. All the aunts and uncles do the same for each other. It's always great fun to exchange and open them at Christmas. Another tradition, on the Marquis side, that began when the cousins were very young and has continued as everyone has gotten older are little performances. There might be some lip-syncing, dancing, singing - kind of acting silly and simply having fun. It's always something the grandparents enjoy, especially when the adults take their turn.

Howard Puertas (Spanish Teacher) and son Ben (Senior)

On Christmas Eve, we stay up late enjoying holiday classics like Home Alone and The Polar Express, creating memories together. We also like to share a special dinner together and just spend some quality time with each other.

Stephanie Bolduc (Manager of Administrative Services) and daughter Genna (Senior)

Our favorite Christmas Tradition:

In a day and age where parents and teenagers rarely see eye to eye, Genna and I share the same favorite Christmas tradition – Picking and cutting our family Christmas tree!

Every year since the girls were little, we've loaded up the truck and headed to a local tree farm, often turning the outing into a scene straight out of "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation!" Genna always insists on finding the BIGGEST TREE EVER! Liv prefers a large tree, but it doesn't have to be ginormous, while Alaina is all about finding the total package—not too big, not too small, with just the right shape and look!

Well, this often led to a few disagreements among our girls, and Mike and I found ourselves mediating to help the girls reach an agreement. And by agreement, I mean they usually end up choosing the tree Genna picked out. This was in part because Genna had the most passionate and compelling argument for why her tree was PERFECT. She would get so excited and animated, that her sisters usually laughed and agreed, it was the perfect tree for us. (And to be honest, the girls might have been a little afraid of Genna.)

As the years have gone by, nothing has changed. The girls are older, but they still love going to pick our tree every Thanksgiving weekend. We head to our friend's tree farm and Genna finds the biggest, most outrageous tree. The other two girls look around and make suggestions, but ultimately agree with Genna…. bigger is better when it comes to Christmas trees!

Julie Verde (Math/Chair Department) and son Dylan (Sophomore)

Attending Christmas Eve Mass, hosting a Christmas Day gathering with a delicious roast beef dinner, decorating cookies and gingerbread houses, and trimming the tree together all create wonderful memories. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.

Steve Morrison (Director of Admission) and son Aidan (Senior)

We discussed and agreed that our favorite tradition is reading books on Christmas Eve just before bed. This tradition began when we started our family and has turned into a cherished ritual. Every Christmas Eve, after completing all the essential tasks, namely setting out milk and cookies—each child selects a Christmas book for Dad to read. In truth, there's not much "selecting" involved, as we end up reading the same four beloved books each year: "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," "The Polar Express," "The Elf on the Shelf," and "The Night Before Christmas." This tradition is truly one of the most exciting and joyous moments our family shares throughout the year.

Merry Christmas, STA and Happy New Year!
