Bank of Canada Cuts Interest & Economic Pressures

Key Interest Rate to 3.25%

The Bank of Canada has lowered its key interest rate to 3.25%. The Bank of Canada says the Canadian economy grew by 1% in the third quarter, somewhat below projections, pulled down by business investment, inventories and exports. The Bank says consumer spending and housing activity both picked up, suggesting lower interest rates are beginning to boost household spending. Looking ahead, the GST holiday will reduce inflation temporarily but will normalize once it ends. The next scheduled date for announcing the overnight rate target is January 29, 2025.

CFIB Concerned Over US Tarrifs

The Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses (CFIB) is raising concerns over proposed tariffs. The CFIB says blanket tariffs on Canadian goods would have a massive economic impact on our economy. It was noted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses that small and medium-sized businesses account for approximately 40% of exports to the US. The CFIB says tariffs would not just affect our exporters as their effect on the value of the Canadian dollar would increase the cost of US imports — affecting small businesses and consumers alike.

Challenges for Local Businesses

Our local entrepreneurs are working tirelessly to implement complex changes:

  • Reprogramming point-of-sale systems on short notice
  • Updating pricing for thousands of items
  • Training staff on new procedures during their busiest season

These changes are not only time-consuming but also costly for businesses. Set up for point of sales systems involving re-programming can lead to additional costs as well as time to manage at the busiest time of the year for some retailers.
