The Healthy Nudge

December 2024

Welcome to The Healthy Nudge. Each month, we'll get you up to speed on the latest developments in policy-relevant health behavioral economics research at CHIBE. See our 5 top stories below.

1) How to build a good research partnership

How do great research collaborations happen? CHIBE Associate Director Dr. Amol Navathe developed a long-standing relationship with Hawaii Medical Services Association (HMSA), the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Hawaii, for nearly a decade. Together they have reduced the operational and financial pressures of fee-for-service models. See how Dr. Navathe crafted this partnership in this Q&A.

CHIBE is highlighting the ways our affiliates have created successful research partnerships. This is the second in a series of articles illustrating effective collaborations. Are you a CHIBE investigator looking for a partner for your research, or do you have a partnership story to tell? Contact chibe@pennmedicine.upenn.edu.

2) How numbers drive behavioral decision-making

A Knowledge at Wharton article featuring CHIBE affiliate Katy Milkman, PhD

A new study from Wharton finds that people have a strong preference for numbers over words or graphical representations of the same information in decision-making — a phenomenon that researchers call “quantification fixation.” Read more here.

3) Skeptical reactions to breast cancer screening benefits and harms: Antecedents, consequences, and implications for screening communication

A Health Psychology paper by Dr. Laura Scherer with colleagues including CHIBE affiliate Dr. Marilyn Schapira

When people receive information about the benefits and harms of mammography screening, they do not always accept it at face value and instead express skepticism. The purpose of this research was to identify the psychological drivers of this skepticism. See the findings here.

Medicaid Nutrition Supports: Implementation Innovations

January 9, 2025, 1 – 2 pm ET

Nutrition insecurity is the most common social need among Medicaid members. To address this issue and mitigate the negative health impacts, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released state guidance in Fall 2023 on allowable nutrition supports under Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Early data shows Medicaid nutrition supports are well received by enrollees and providers. However, adoption remains nascent, with policymakers facing challenges in policy design, implementation, and identifying how to encourage service uptake within CMS guidelines.

This webinar, made possible by the Kaiser Permanente National Community Benefit Fund at The East Bay Community Foundation, will feature a panel discussion with Medicaid agency staff from Massachusetts and Michigan, two states pursuing nutrition supports under different Medicaid authorities. Speakers will discuss how states can better tailor nutrition service design and implementation to maximize positive impacts on enrollee health. CHIBE Director Dr. Kevin Volpp will talk about the existing evidence around Food is Medicine programs. State Medicaid agencies, policymakers, and providers are invited to join this 60-minute event.
