KHS Biology with a Pop-Culture Twist | |
The students in Michaela King's Biology classes at Kings High School have been learning about Protein Synthesis - Taylor Swift style!
Protein Synthesis is the process of how proteins are made in our cells. Students learned how to transcribe DNA sequences into mRNA sequences, and then learned to translate the mRNA into amino acid sequences using their codon chart. This is a skill that the students need to succeed on their end-of-course Biology test in the Spring.
Miss King brought pop culture into her lesson to help make it more relatable for her students. Her students applied the new skills they learned with a fun Protein Synthesis activity called "Swiftie Synthesis." They had to transcribe and translate the DNA sequences of 8 celebrity boyfriends of Taylor Swift into amino acid sequences. Students analyzed the amino acid sequences to determine which eye color trait (Blue, brown, or green) each celebrity boyfriend had. She said, "It was fun to see kids engaged in this activity to realize that specific traits such as eye color in humans are from amino acid sequences."
