Intersession: Avoid Burnout and Excel in Accelerated Courses!

4-week intersession courses are brief and compressed into longer days and intense studying, but if you can stay focused and avoid getting overwhelmed or burnt out, the effort is 100% worth it! Check out these tips and tricks for succeeding in accelerated and condensed courses!

Also remember that access to academic support resources is available 24/7, including our 100% Online Library, at coastline.edu/academic-support. You got this, Dolphins!

Tips for Mastering 4-Week Accelerated Courses

  1. Time Management will make or break you. Exams and quizzes in these courses are often scheduled daily or weekly, causing you to be in a constant cramming and purging content cycle. Plan out your study schedule each and every day, even down to the hour if needed, to ensure you don’t get overwhelmed and forget something.
  2. Expect and plan for homework every night. You’ll have to spend time on coursework every night - just expect to. There’s really no way to get around it. Even if you don’t have an assignment to work on, plan to study course material for at least 30 minutes or an hour every night so you don’t fall behind.
  3. Remember to give yourself a break each week. One thing to remember when mapping out your schedule for each week is to make sure to structure your time to allow an evening off for you. These courses are a tornado of studying that is easy to get sucked into - remember to give yourself time to step back for a bit and breathe.
  4. Ask for help as soon as you realize you need it. There is no time during Intersession courses to waffle on whether you need something clarified or further explained. As soon as you think you need help with something, contact your instructor or a classmate. The sooner you have an answer, the sooner you can get back to work.
  5. Outlines, key terms, and PowerPoint decks will be your best friends. In these courses, you can expect each week to have multiple chapters assigned - sometimes even a chapter a day. Let’s be honest - sometimes, that’s just not going to happen. If there’s a week or two that you can’t read every single chapter assigned, use all your available resources of condensed material to ensure you have a strong grasp on at least all of the week’s key concepts.
