Wood Hoods vs. Metal Hoods

Choosing between a wood hood or a metal hood for your kitchen involves considering aesthetics, cost, and functionality. Wood hoods offer a warm, classic appearance that complements both traditional or contemporary kitchens. They can be customized with different stains, paints, and trims, allowing for a seamless blend with kitchen cabinets. Metal hoods, on the other hand, provide a sleek, modern look but can also compliment any kitchen style. Common finishes include stainless steel, copper, and brass, each adding a unique visual appeal.

In terms of price, wood hoods tend to be more expensive due to the customization options and craftsmanship involved. They require skilled labor to match the kitchen’s cabinetry and can increase the overall design cost. Metal hoods vary in price depending on the material; stainless steel is typically more affordable, while custom copper or brass designs can be pricey. Metal hoods generally have a more straightforward installation process, which can reduce labor costs.

Functionally, metal hoods are often more durable and easier to maintain. They resist heat and grease buildup, making them ideal for high-use kitchens. Wood hoods need more care to avoid warping or staining from moisture and grease. However, both types usually house a metal insert that handles the actual ventilation, ensuring effective airflow regardless of the exterior material. Ultimately, the choice depends on your kitchen’s style, budget, and maintenance preferences. Contact us to design your dream kitchen with the hood of your dreams!

Project Spotlight!

Transforming this previous dark rustic lake home kitchen into a transitional bright kitchen oasis involved opening the space, enhancing functionality, and creating an inviting atmosphere for entertaining. We started by replacing dark wood cabinetry with light-colored cabinets, paired with quartz countertops for a fresh, airy feel. We then added a large island with seating for guests, including many barstools for comfort and style. Open shelving mixed with closed cabinetry provides ample storage while maintaining a clean look. Also built-in pantry cabinets were put in to maximize organization. For added warmth, they integrated natural elements like wood accents and statement light fixtures. The result is a bright, functional kitchen perfect for gathering and enjoying their lake views.

This Month's Feature Recipe

Easy Holiday Punch

This Summer Berry Crisp might just be the easiest dessert you've ever made. It will definitely rank up there among the most delicious! The recipe is a wonderful little trick to have up your sleeve for those times when you need a fabulous dessert with minimal effort!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cranberry juice or pomegranate
  • 2 cups pineapple juice
  • 2 cups orange juice or tangerine, blood orange, grapefruit
  • cinnamon sticks
  • star anise
  • fresh rosemary sprigs
  • 2 cups sparkling apple cider / juice or grape (chilled)
  • 2 cups ginger beer or ginger ale, lemon lime soda (chilled)
  • orange slices
  • fresh cranberries and/or pomegranate seeds
  • simple syrup (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine cranberry, pineapple and orange juice in a pitcher or jar that will fit in your refrigerator. Add cinnamon sticks, star anise and rosemary. Chill. (Do this step in the morning or night before and assemble the rest in your punch bowl just before serving.)
  2. Transfer the chilled juices and garnishes to a punch bowl or drink dispenser. Add sparkling apple cider and ginger beer. Float orange slices and fresh cranberries on top.
  3. Depending on the juices you choose or your taste preferences, you can sweeten the punch with a 1:1 simple syrup. Dissolve 1 part white sugar (or honey) in 1 part water in the microwave or in a saucepan, then cool. Stir a few tablespoons at a time into the punch until it reaches your desired level of sweetness.
