Last week I got together with my marvelous friends Rita Farro, Mary Mulari, and Deanna Springer. This was our fourth annual gathering for a full week of dedicated sewing. We call our sewing week, S.E.W. That's Sewing, Eating, and Working Out. In 2018 we stayed at Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat Center near Davenport, IA. We were way out in the country driving dirt roads to the retreat center. Resident caretaker, Sister Margaret, prepared our healthy and delicious meals. We finished many sewing projects. Rita arranged daily yoga classes, but the weather foiled our exercise due to an unusually heavy snowstorm, leaving us stranded for three days. Luckily, we had electricity which led to power sewing but only one yoga session.
In 2022, 2023, and again this year, we enjoyed Grandma's House at Circle K Farm in Davenport, IA. The entire century-old country house was ours. Lots of power sewing here too. In 2022, thrifting was introduced with even more thrifting last year. So, this year we aptly renamed our retreat to S.E.T. That's Sewing, Eating, and Thrifting. Yes, this year we got lots of sewing done, but thrifting gained as a whimsical daily sport. Some thrift purchases were dissected and evolved into sewing projects, while others were washed and worn on-site.
What kind of sewing did we do? There were common projects: Gifts for others; Projects for work; and Sewing for ourselves. Overall, our theme was sewing for fun.
Whether you are sewing solo or with friends, I hope you too are having fun. Enjoy the holidays!
