IFA Reacts To Labor Secretary Nomination

Last week President-elect Donald Trump announced the nomination of U.S. Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-OR) to lead the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). IFA issued a statement congratulating the nominee.

Go deeper: Chavez-DeRemer’s two-year congressional record is mixed. IFA is pleased she supported franchising on the U.S. House vote to repeal the NLRB joint employer rule earlier this year, but she also cosponsored the organized labor driven Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act that would enact a direct liability joint employer standard on franchisors and franchisees.

The bottom line: The Chavez-DeRemer nomination is important because the U.S. Department of Labor administers key workplace statutes such as the Fair Labor Standards Act and Family and Medical Leave Act.

IFA Advocacy Defeats Minnesota Regulation

Following more than a year of relentless advocacy by the IFA-led Save Local Restaurants coalition, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey vetoed the city council's controversial Labor Standards Board (LSB) resolution

Zoom out: IFA engaged directly with local franchisees and business owners to ensure elected leaders heard their concerns, including mobilizing more than 400 business owners to write a letter urging the mayor to veto the resolution.

What's next: While last week marked an important milestone, IFA remains hard at work focused on shoring up the five votes required to sustain the mayor’s veto at the next full council meeting on Thursday, Dec. 5.

IFA Launches Payment Choice Coalition

The Payment Choice Coalition (PCC) formally launched last Wednesday, November 20th, with IFA President and CEO Matt Haller serving as its Executive Director.

Background: Earlier this year, U.S. Senators Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) introduced proposed legislation to create a U.S. regulatory framework for stablecoins. The bipartisan Lummis-Gillibrand Payment Stablecoin Act (S.4155) seeks to promote responsible innovation, while protecting consumers and digital asset market participants.

Why it matters: Comprised of small business owners, franchisees and other merchants, the PCC aims to establish a bipartisan legislative framework for stablecoin issuance to lower costs for franchise owners.
