Marylanders Online: 2024 Year in Review | |

Marylanders Online, a state-funded digital literacy initiative led by the University of Maryland Extension (UME) in partnership with the College of Information (INFO), entered its third year in 2024. Leading several of the state’s digital literacy efforts, Marylanders Online focused the year on resource curation, grassroots community engagement, and capacity-building. These efforts, added to the program’s expanding portfolio of digital classes and programs, have made 2024 a year of notable growth and achievements for Marylanders Online. Digital Navigator Helpline
The Tech Support Helpline continues to be a valuable resource for Marylanders looking for computer help, tech support, or assistance with finding devices, resources, or affordable internet. UME Marylanders Online's team of dedicated digital navigators handled 18,159 calls in 2024, a 198% increase from 2023.

Chromebook OS Recovery
Marylanders Online's INFO curriculum team has developed a new resource to help Chromebook users independently resolve the “Something went wrong” error message. The Chromebook OS video series is available on YouTube and provides an easy-to-follow, four-part tutorial that guides users through the Chromebook OS recovery process. This resource is also available in PDF form.

MONET Digital Navigation Toolkit
The Marylanders Online Navigator Training Toolkit (MONET) is a new module-based train-the-trainer course designed to equip digital navigators with essential skills needed to bridge the digital divide in their communities. MONET is currently accessible to digital navigators based in Maryland, with future plans for an open-source curriculum. Learn more.

Pilot Project Succes
The "Digital Skills, Financial Education, and Small Business Ownership for Incarcerated Individuals Nearing Release" pilot program funded by UME Marylanders Online has achieved remarkable success at a northern Maryland county jail. Twenty-one inmates completed an intensive six-week curriculum, building their digital literacy, entrepreneurship knowledge, and vocational readiness. Read more about our pilot projects.

Asset Mapping Maryland
Maryland's asset mapping initiative aims to promote digital inclusion across the state by leveraging the sharing of community resources. If you are an organization that provides digital skills classes, wi-fi, tech support, training, devices, tablets, hotspots, or other digital services, please share your resources for inclusion in Maryland’s digital asset map. The National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA) has compiled a list of published research about broadband adoption and digital inclusion. Digital inclusion practitioners, local leaders, policymakers, and others can use the inventory to locate experts and review their research, enhancing the capacity to make informed decisions and create sound programs and policies. Low-Cost Internet Plans
NDIA has also developed a low-cost internet ratings system, Grading Internet for Good (GIG), to evaluate low-cost plans’ affordability and quality. Low-cost plans are graded using a rubric and given a Good, Better, or Best rating. View it here.

Resources for Affordable Internet & Devices
Maryland Broadband Navigator is an interactive national GIS map that utilizes FCC census block-level data to show the best available internet service, prices, and broadband infrastructure by zip code.
Universal Service Administrative Co. is a tool to help find companies in your area that offer Lifeline, which can reduce the cost of your phone or internet service by providing a monthly discount.

Montgomery County Awarded NTIA Funding | |
Montgomery County was recommended for a $11.1 million award from NTIA's Digital Equity Competitive Grant Program to develop its "Digital Divide" program. This initiative would provide digital skills training in Maryland's four most populous counties: Montgomery, Baltimore County, Baltimore City, and Prince George’s County. The grant will be dispersed over four years, with a fifth year for evaluation. | |

The Digital Bridge program aims to help covered populations gain employment, improve access to education and healthcare, increase data privacy and avoid online fraud, better understand AI and prevent cyberbullying, expand their social and civic engagement, and increase access to the benefits of the internet and technology.
Partnering agencies include WorkSource Montgomery, Senior Planet Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) by AARP, The Career Catchers Inc., Action Youth Media, Baltimore County Dept. of Aging, and the Montgomery County Public Library in rural Poolesville. Action Youth Media will partner with Wide Angle Youth Media in Baltimore, and Joe’s Music Emporium and The Arc in Prince George’s County. Learn about Montgomery Connects.

Net Inclusion 2025
The annual Net Inclusion conference will be held May 20th - 22nd at the Gila River Indian Community in Phoenix, Arizona. This conference brings together hundreds of practitioners, advocates, academics, internet service providers, and policymakers together to share their knowledge and discuss: policies impacting digital equity, digital inclusion best practices, and programming. Lightning Round proposal submissions are due by March 7th.

Montgomery County
In partnership with the Latino Economic Development Center, Marylanders Online will be hosting basic computer workshops every Wednesday until March 19th. Call 202-858-0403 to register.
In collaboration with Gilchrest Immigrant Resource Center, Marylanders Online offers regular digital skills training from beginner and intermediate level eight-week courses to one-hour scam prevention. Classes fill up quickly, sign up to be notified of new classes here.
