HPAI Spreads to Maryland

The first infection of avian influenza in Maryland was detected in Caroline County on January 10th, followed by two other cases in Queen Anne's and Caroline Counties. Find more information here.


The Maryland Department of Agriculture announced restrictions to Eastern Shore counties on hauling poultry litter on January 8th. Current restrictions are in effect until February 7th but may last longer depending on the status of infections. Read the full order here.

FTC Files Lawsuit Against John Deere


The Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit against John Deere on January 15th for allegedly violating U.S. competition laws. The agency claims Deere’s equipment design often necessitates proprietary software available only to authorized dealers, which in turn limits farmers and independent repair shop’s ability to perform repairs. Maryland Looks to Boost Farm Vehicle Weights


A bill backed by the state ag and transportation departments would increase the gross weight of five-axle vehicles from 87,000 to 88,000 pounds and set the six-axle limit at 95,000 pounds. The weight increase would align Maryland's regulations with Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. More here.

Annual Implementation Reports Due March 1st


Annual Implementation Reports (AIRs) documenting nutrient applications for the calendar year 2024 are due to the Nutrient Management Program by March 1st, 2025. Farmers can report through the Maryland OneStop Portal online or complete a paper version of the AIR form and CAFO form. Find more information here.

Mid-Atlantic 4R to Offer Cost-Share Funding


The Mid-Atlantic 4R team will be offering 30 vouchers available to farmers and agribusiness pairs to take one's farming operation to the next step in advanced nutrient management. The voucher may be used to implement a new nutrient management practice. More information and the application can be found here.

Farm Smart - Nutrien Ag Solutions


Nutrien Ag Solutions is offering up to $2.50 per acre for farmers interested in recording and sharing harvested winter wheat, grain corn, silage corn, and soybean data.

Commercial Pesticide Applicator Recertification


Join the University of Maryland on February 4th in Frederick, MD and February 6th in Denton, MD. Mid-Atlantic Certified Crop Adviser Scholarship


The Mid-Atlantic Certified Crop Advisers are opening their 2025 scholarship application for undergraduate students working towards a degree in agriculture. Preference will be given to students interested in crop science/agronomy. The board agreed to fund up to $1,500 in scholarship funding for the 2025 school year. National Corn Growers Association Scholarship


The National Corn Growers Association is excited to announce the launch of its Fall 2025 Scholarship Program, aimed at supporting students pursuing educational opportunities in agriculture and related fields. Applications are now open and will close on January 31st. Learn more online here.

Mountaire Scholarship


Every year, Mountaire awards dozens of $2,500 scholarships to children and grandchildren of Mountaire employees, growers, and grain producers. The deadline to apply is March 3rd. The application can be found here.

Maryland Farm Bureau Scholarship


The Maryland Farm Bureau is awarding five $2,000 scholarships for the 2025-2026 academic year. Three scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing academic degrees in food, agriculture and/or natural resources disciplines, and two scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing degrees in other academic disciplines or who are pursuing minors in food, agriculture and/or natural resources disciplines. Applications are due March 21st and can be found here.

University of Maryland Workforce Development Internship


The University of Maryland Workforce Development Internship is a ten-week full-time Summer experiential learning and professional development opportunity for undergraduate students currently enrolled in a in a two-year, four-year degree or certificate program and who are interested in a career in agriculture and natural resources. Applications are due March 23rd and can be found here.

Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation Scholarship


MAEF Academic Scholarships are open to rising junior or senior undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in majors leading to careers in agricultural education or Extension education. Qualified candidates should complete and submit their online application by March 25th. Delmarva Chicken Association Scholarship


Undergraduate scholarships of $2,000 are available to residents of the Delmarva Peninsula who are undergraduate students at any accredited, degree-granting institution, with an academic major in a subject relevant to Delmarva's chicken community and who are pursuing a career path leading to employment in any segment of Delmarva's chicken community. Graduate level scholarships of $3,000 will be available to graduate students at United States universities who are engaged in research that directly benefits Delmarva's chicken community. Applications for both are due March 28th and can be found here.
