Dear Farm Friends,

Meet our Mountain Bounty farmer profile of the week: Mike Berlin, 40, our box truck driver, mechanic, fashionista and provocateur. He also gets it done out in the fields.

What brought you to Mountain Bounty?

My girlfriend and I quit our jobs in New York, went on a big road trip and in the end, moved here, because one of our best friends was working at Mountain Bounty. A couple years later I got caught by the Mountain Bounty vortex, and now I’ve been here seven years.

A lot of my job is moving produce around. I organize and load the CSA boxes and deliver them to our Western Nevada County pickup sites. That’s a lot of heavy produce. I’m one of those people who likes to look for what can be improved. If I can move more boxes on wheels and lift fewer boxes with my body, I will do everything in my power to do that. It means I can move more boxes longer.

My dad was a car mechanic and some of that rubbed off on me, so I work on various farm trucks, tractors, and whatever else has blown up.

While I don’t think of myself in a leadership role, I’ve been here a few years and at a certain point you just have so much experience that you start telling other people what to do.

Some things at the farm have changed but many have stayed the same. When we’re out harvesting, it’s kind of the same vibes as it’s always been: small farm crew, big orders, and really high-quality. And just making sure that happens every week. I like the people.

The work can be brutal, but it can also be really fun. Ask anybody who works at a desk all day and they’ll tell you they wish they were outside all day, it’s a balance to say the least. I like the social nature of the job, there is time for conversation, and that coupled with the produce itself, it’s sort of impossible to find that anywhere else.

Growing food is one of the most useful things you can do in this world. It is surprisingly easy to justify coming back every year. I try hard not to take it for granted.

A note about box returns!

There are a few things we ask our members to do so we can continue to reuse the boxes efficiently:

  1. Remove the fruit from your boxes immediately so the fruit does not stain the box (plus it keeps longer outside of the plastic shell).
  2. Store your Fruit Share box inside until you return it
  3. If your box is torn or stained, please do not return it and instead place it in your recycling bin. Both farms are using crew time to manage the box return program, so we'd love to only deal with boxes that can truly be reused.

Thanks for your support!

Recipes, storage tips, inspiration and nutrition information:

  • Roasted Red Pepper and Walnut Dip, also known as Muhummara (Click here) is an amazing sauce that really concentrates the sweetness of the Red Peppers, and these ones are in their prime this week! Dip crackers, flatbread or fresh veggies in this delicious and filling dip!

  • Tatsoi salad (Click here) is a fun way to use your Tatsoi (Southern Spinach) raw! This recipe also calls for Carrots and Cucumber, both of which you may find in your box this week!

  • If you've had enough of the classic corn on the cob (is that possible?) try out this Charred Corn and Haloumi Salad (Click here). This recipe can work as a side, on toast, on pasta or can be bulked up into a larger salad with whatever you have in your fridge.

  • I love to roast a whole head of Garlic and just keep it in the fridge to spread on toast, add to sauces or toss in with a scramble! Here is a simple Roasted Garlic Recipe (Click here) that will add a complex flavor to your favorite dishes.
