Corporate Transparency Act Update

Quick update, the Corporate Transparency Act has been blocked by a federal court. Two major key takeaways are:

  • No Immediate Filing Obligations: Thanks to this latest development, Reporting Companies are not currently required to submit beneficial ownership information (BOI) reports. This includes the initial reports for entities formed before January 1, 2024, that were due by January 13, 2025.
  • Voluntary Submissions: While not mandatory, the U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has indicated that companies may opt to submit BOI reports voluntarily if they choose.

2025 Governor's Business Plan Contest

The contest is free to enter and the online deadline for the initial 250-word submission is Friday, Jan. 31, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.

If you’re not familiar, the contest is designed to encourage entrepreneurs in the startup stage of tech-enabled businesses in Wisconsin. The contest links up-and-coming entrepreneurs with a statewide network of community resources, expert advice and mentoring, management talent and possible sources of capital. Over time, the contest has led to valuable public and media exposure for the top business plans and spurred economic growth in Wisconsin.

Finalists will share in more than $125,000 in cash and in-kind prizes. For their initial entries, contestants will submit a 250-word idea abstract online at www.govsbizplancontest.com. That’s where contestants will also find business plan templates and other information, such as the Entrepreneurs’ Toolkit. The toolkit provides business startup information and assistance, networking contacts and technical resources.

For anyone who wants to learn more about the process, we are hosting a free webinar on Wednesday, Jan. 22 with the Tech Council president, a veteran judge and a past contestant. The webinar will be really helpful in learning the dos and don’ts of the contest, the ability to ask questions to the group, etc. Here’s the link to register for that.

Contestants who advance to subsequent contest rounds will expand their plan in stages. More than 70 judges drawn from the finance, sales, marketing, research and technology sectors across Wisconsin will score the entries and provide feedback on submissions.

The link to enter is www.govsbizplancontest.com. All information about the contest can be found on that website. I am also linking the latest press release that you can send to those who might be interested in entering the contest.

BBB Business Scam Alert: Watch out for fake government compliance notices targeting businesses

Scammers have long impersonated government officials and agencies to trick victims into giving up money or personal information. Now, they’re targeting business owners and confusing them into giving up their information.

How the scam works

You receive a letter in the mail that looks very official. It claims to come from a government agency or department, like the United States Business Regulations Department or the Department of Records Management. It’s addressed to the business and has a notice ID number. Scammers combine personal information collected from data breaches with official-looking seals and watermarks to make the correspondence seem legitimate.
