DECEMBER 2024

Dear Alexis,

Let the Holidays continue!

December is a time for celebration and planning, and in this final newsletter of the year, we're highlighting key milestones, upcoming events, and ways to end the year on a high note. December is full of opportunities to get involved and be ready for many more opportunities come the New Year. Over the span of 2024, our members have helped us achieve a huge milestone of awarding over $20,000 in student scholarships across the Branch and its Institutes. We’ve held over 100 professional meetings, offered 30+ PDH courses, had a combined 1,400+ attendees to technical activities (meetings/luncheons/events), 900+ attendees to social activities (happy hours/sporting events/fundraising events), and over 300 attendees to civic activities hosted by the Branch, it’s Institutes, committees and Younger Members Forum! It’s truly amazing to see how engaged our members are in the engineering community and beyond and we continue to grow and offer more opportunities every year!

I was fortunate to attend the Transportation & Development Institute’s annual Capital Improvement Program on Thursday, December 5th. It was great to see 150 engineers attend to hear from transportation leaders within Central Florida discuss their plans for the next year. The Younger Member Forum (YMF) will be hosting their annual Toys for Tots Drive on December 9th! If you are reading this newsletter as soon as you received it, it’s not too late to attend – see below for more information.

As we look forward to 2025 – it’s never too early to start putting those holds on your calendar for all of the events that are listed below for next month. Also – save the date for Engineers Week, February 16-22, 2025! There is already a tentative schedule set as discussed in this newsletter, so make sure to stay connected for more information and opportunities to come. I look forward to continuing to see growth in numbers of our members attending the events planned by our many institutes, committees, and younger member group in 2025. I urge all of our members to try to attend at least one more event that you did this past year, even if that only brings you to one event – I will take that as a win for everyone! If you have younger engineers or recent graduates in your office – I implore you to encourage them to come out to a YMF happy hour or a technical meeting in their area of expertise next year.

Lastly, membership renewals are due by December 31, 2024. Before you renew your membership this year, I encourage you and your company to take advantage of the ASCE Partner and Associate Partner programs. Not only does it streamline your invoicing by having all of your members renew at one time, but you also receive a discount on every membership renewal fee. Companies with 10-49 annual memberships (Associate Partner) get a 20% discount (plus other benefits) and companies with 50+ annual memberships (Partner) get an even larger customized discount (plus other benefits).

Together, we’ve achieved amazing things, and we’re looking forward to an even brighter 2025. Let’s finish this year strong!

Thank you for your continued support! Until next time,

STEAM Event on November 14th, 2024

EWRI volunteered during Jacob’s STEAM Day on November 14, 2024th, with K-6 students at the Orlando Northwest Neighborhood Center. The event aimed to spark curiosity and foster a love for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics among the students. Students were divided into small groups, rotating through the various activity tables. Activities included firefighting demonstrations, wetlands exploration, bicycle safety, and environmental science projects. Jacobs Engineering generously distributed over 60 nature kits to the students.

Site Visit to the S-69 Weir & tour of the Kissimmee River

On December 5th, 2024, EWRI organized a tour of the Kissimmee River Restoration Project with the SFWMD and the USACE. The tour included a site visit to District structures S-65D, S-65D Lock, S-65DX2, and the S-69 weir on the southern end of the Kissimmee River, and a guided pontoon boat tour of the Kissimmee River upstream of the S-65D structures. The tour highlighted the District and USACE efforts to de-channelize a 22-mile section of the Kissimmee River, restore the original winding riverbed and floodplain, and re-hydrate adjacent wetlands. Many gators and migratory birds were observed during the pontoon boat tour, including the endangered snail kite. Thank you, Nicolle Masters and Patty Therrien, SFWMD, for an excellent tour!

Past Event

On November 19th, the Structural Engineering Institute hosted the "Delegated Design of Connections Using Finite Element Analysis" luncheon. The presentation examined practices in connection design, ranging from traditional methods such as AISC tables, hand calculations, and Excel spreadsheets to modern approaches like BIM/detailing software and connection design software. Ten members attended the luncheon.

Our guest speaker was Dave Eckrote, PE, Director at IDEA StatiCa. Through design examples, Mr. Eckrote highlighted the revolution of the Component-Based Finite Element Method (CBFEM). The presentation illustrated how FEA can be applied in connection design to ensure compliance with AISC requirements.

December Report

As winter break approaches, students have been concentrating on exams and final preparations for the spring semester. Despite the busy schedule, ASCE has achieved several significant milestones. A major highlight was assisting with UCF’s Annual Concrete Exposure Day. There were a total of 200 participants who had the opportunity to learn about various uses and the fundamentals of concrete. We also had two General Body Meetings with Interplan LLC and Kimley-Horn. Both presentations offered insights into their engineering disciplines, providing members with a deeper understanding of the industry. Another key focus has been interest meetings for small competitions. Early involvement in these competitions is vital to our chapter’s success, and we are thrilled to see the enthusiasm from our members.

ASCE proudly participated in the CECE Career Fair. Students connected with industry leaders and explored potential internships and full-time positions. Additionally, our Lunch and Learn with Roger Schmitt offered professional insights into advancements in the construction materials industry. Furthermore, BCC held the Negotiations and Compensation Panel which discussed effective strategies for negotiation and compensation. To unwind from studies, members joined us for a Video Game Knight, enjoying a much-needed break. Finally, we held a Friendsgiving celebration to conclude the fall semester.

We look forward to an exciting spring semester filled with competition preparation, general body meetings, networking opportunities, socials, and more!
