Minimum Protocol Revision
Changes for BTL Testing

BACnet Testing Laboratories (BTL) is updating the minimum protocol revision required for products entering testing. Beginning January 1, 2025, Revision 18 will be the minimum protocol required for products entering testing.
As stated in the BTL Testing Policies:
The minimum Protocol_Revision is determined on January 1st each year and is the highest Protocol_Revision which has been available in a BTL Test Plan for at least 4 years. The schedule below indicates the specifics of how this will work for the next few years.

Save time and money during BTL Testing
by utilizing Pre-testing Tools

To save time and money during testing, BACnet Testing Laboratories strongly encourages manufacturers to take advantage of the wide range of pre-testing tools that focus on developing BACnet products. “It has been found that when the manufacturer performs pre-testing prior to submitting their device for BTL Testing, the issues that are found are limited, thus saving testing cost and expediting testing time,” states Rich Ruel, Testing Services Manager for the BTL Lab. Additionally, the BTL Test Package, used by all RBTOs for BTL Testing, is available to developers for their own internal pre-testing.
A list of third-party pre-testing tools can be found at btl.org/pre-testing-tools. The types of pre-testing tools include Test Frameworks, BACnet Client Software, BACnet Protocol Analyzers, BACnet Device Simulators, General Tools, Reference BACnet Routers and Reference BACnet MS/TP Masters. These lists are provided as a convenience only. They represent a sampling of available resources and are not intended to be complete. No recommendation, endorsement or any form of warranty is implied or provided by BTL or BACnet International for any of the items in these lists.

Join BACnet International's
Cybersecurity Acceleration Program

The program will provide a complete Certificate Authority reference implementation and a sister tool (BACCARI) that can generate and validate Certificate Signing Request files and package them into an interoperable file format for the Certificate Authority. Additionally, all program participants will have access to cybersecurity implementation webinars and an interactive, peer-to-peer forum led by experts in BACnet and cybersecurity.
Participation in the program will help suppliers ensure their certificate management tools are interoperable with tools from other suppliers. This will keep integration costs down and maintain their reputation as collaborative participants in multivendor environments. The program will also shorten the learning curve for manufacturers who need cybersecurity implementation experts on staff and help ensure their products are ready for whatever comes next in building automation cybersecurity. Access to BRITE is also included in the Cybersecurity Acceleration Program.

Johnson Controls Academy doubles training capacity to tackle national skilled building systems technician shortage | |
MILWAUKEE, Nov. 18, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), a global leader in smart, healthy and sustainable buildings, is continuing to grow its industry-leading national workforce development initiative, the Johnson Controls Academy. This expansion, developed in partnership with Lincoln Tech (parent company Lincoln Educational Services), is designed to address the growing demand for skilled technicians in the installation, service and maintenance of building systems. Graduates of the program will be placed into service technician roles throughout the U.S.
The expanded program, hosted at Lincoln Tech's Denver campus, will double the number of technicians trained through the JCI Academy, complementing the existing offering at Lincoln Tech's Columbia, Maryland campus. The expansion is timely, as the industry faces a critical shortage of skilled building technicians, exacerbated by an aging workforce and the increasing complexity of building technologies. Illustrating this challenge, 46% of HR professionals in a recent report said they consider skilled trades positions "very difficult" to fill.
