Welcome our new Howard County LHIC Staff!

Director: Maribet Rivera-Brute is the new Director of the Howard County Local Health Improvement Coalition (LHIC). Maribet’s previous professional roles included serving as the Governance and Strategic Programs Coordinator with the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), Outreach and Partnership Analyst with the Federal COVID Response Team with IQ Solutions, and Program Coordinator with the UME, Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) in Baltimore City. Maribet enjoys spending time in nature, walking, running, listening to classical music, and having fun with her family and friends, and resides in Howard County with her family.


Community Engagement Coordinator: Stephanie Foster is the new LHIC Community Engagement Coordinator. She has been an employee of Howard County Health Department since November 2022, and has 8+ years experience in program management as well as community engagement. In her free time, she enjoys playing tennis, volunteering at her church, and spending time with family.

Hispanic Heritage Month Resource Fair

The Howard County Health Department and partners attended the Hispanic Heritage Month Resource Fair on October 9th at Deep Run Elementary School. As part of the LHIC's Food Security Committee efforts, the Community Action Council of Howard County (CAC-HC) provided bags of produce to 63 families and shared information about resources and programs. This was a lovely event that celebrated the diversity within the Howard County Public School System.

Free Classes for Parents/Guardians & Grandparents

HC DrugFree will present this popular parenting class for Howard County parents, guardians, and grandparents of 9-14 years old, and will consider slightly older or younger children on a case by case basis. Adult or child must be a Howard County resident. This program will meet via Zoom for 5 classes. Adults are encouraged to attend all 5 sessions.

Positive Solutions for Families (PSF)

Join the Howard County Office of Children and Families for this evidenced-based, virtual parent series to help increase knowledge and understanding of how to promote children’s social and emotional skills, address challenging behaviors and use positive approaches to help children manage big emotions. For families with children up to the age of 6.



In this four session series, you will receive a weekly workshop video to watch to learn on your own schedule and then virtually meet with a group of parents to extend the learning and share successes and struggles. Receive FREE handouts and resources to individualize in your own home.

Baby Basics (Part 1 & 2)

This two-part (1 hour each day) workshop teaches expecting and new parents about caregiving for a newborn(s) from birth to 6 months of age.



Join this workshop to learn more about feeding and bathing, changing diapers, safe sleeping, tips for when to call the doctor, self-care and overall well-being.

Discover additional resources on lactation and car seat safety.

Balancing Screen Time: Nurturing Young Minds in a Digital World

Research indicates that media exposure for children under the age of five can have long lasting negative impacts on development, specifically brain development. Explore some negative impacts and learn alternative strategies to screen time for our youngest learners to support healthy child development.

Help is Here this Medicare Open Enrollment Period

Medicare Open Enrollment period, is now open through December 7th. New and returning Medicare participants looking to determine what plan best meets their needs are to reach out to Howard County Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) team. SHIP team members are here to help you review your current coverage, to determine what Medicare Advantage Plan is right for you and to learn more about plan changes coming in the new year.

Living Well Workshops

The Living Well Workshops are presented through the collaborative efforts of the Howard County Health Department (HCHD), Howard County Office on Aging and Independence (OAI), and the Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center (JHHCMC).


These are community-based education workshops to help people manage their ongoing health conditions.

Living Well with Chronic Conditions: Toolkit

This six-week, phone-based course meets weekly in a small group conference call with an instructor. The workshop is for those living with or at risk for a chronic condition such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, depression, chronic pain, arthritis, lung disease and other health concerns. Caregivers and support persons are also welcome.

2024 Caregivers Are Super Heroes! - Caregivers Conference

Come enjoy a special day just for family caregivers. Keynote, lunch and special activities are planned for a relaxing day focused on selfcare for caregivers. Remember, selfcare is not selfish!


The caregiver conference opens with an inspiring keynote on resilience by Kim Burton, followed by activities to help you relax, recharge and focus on self-care. Choose from breakout sessions on How Superheroes Can Battle Caregiver Stress, Mastering Chronic Conditions, Lifestyle Strategies for Pain Management, and a LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® session with Loretta Veney.

Autumn Community Day!

Join the Community Ecology Institute for an Autumnal Community Celebration - a seasonal opportunity to explore and enjoy The Green Farmacy Garden (GFG).


Feel free to plug in through the Agenda or choose your own adventure. GFG Staff will be communing and happy to help folks with turmeric harvest and garden questions, and you're welcome to walk the property on your own, peruse the library inside, help rake leaf piles for kids to jump in!

2024 Caregivers Are Super Heroes! - Caregivers Conference

The Howard County Department of Community Resources and Services will offer free Thanksgiving baskets to support county residents experiencing food insecurity during the holidays. No registration; baskets will be distributed at two locations, on a first come, first served basis, while quantities last.

The Howard County Health Department (HCHD) offers free virtual training on Narcan: Register for virtual training.

In-person Narcan training is also available at the HCHD van.
