SRPC's Monthly Newsletter

August 2, 2024

Greetings!

I hope you enjoyed the brief reprieve from the heat earlier this week. It certainly has been a summer of varied weather. My garden is thriving from the mix of heat, sun, and rain.

In July, SRPC wrapped up two major efforts: several HOP grants and the GIS Land Use update!

Until September,

SRPC'S LATEST MAPS

Land Use Data

SRPC’s Senior GIS Planner Jackson Rand and GIS Intern Brian Notinger have recently completed the long-awaited land use data update. Using USGS and NV5 Geospatial aerial imagery flyovers from 2021 and 2022, we have digitized a new GIS land use data layer for the entire SRPC region. We have also updated our Land Use Standard Map set for the region and each of our municipalities, as well as updated our ArcOnline Land Use Standard Map.

Our Land Use Standard Maps can be found on the SRPC website and are available for municipal staff and/or the public to print, use, and distribute. Our online, interactive Land Use Standard Map can be found on our ArcOnline website, and you can download the Land Use data from our Open Data Portal.

SRPC'S LATEST DOCUMENTS

Community Profiles

The Community Profiles that accompany the Regional Data Snapshot have been posted on the SRPC website. These Community Profiles contain many of the metrics found in the Data Snapshot condensed into one page per municipality and chapter of the Snapshot. This year’s community profiles include a new page specific to housing to help communities with the many housing focused initiatives that are ongoing this year. Additionally, the Community Profiles now include Resiliency pages for all 18 communities and Coastal Resiliency pages for the five coastal communities. Find all of the Community Profiles at https://strafford.org/measure/data-snapshot/ or contact Rachel Dewey at rdewey@strafford.org to learn more.

SRPC'S LATEST PROJECTS

SRPC staff have been on a housing kick! The current round of InvestNH Housing Opportunity Planning (HOP) grant series concluded for most New Hampshire municipalities at the end of July. Cities and towns of all sizes applied for HOP grants to utilize housing navigators, update master plans, conduct zoning audits, and coordinate housing needs assessments.

Not sure what any of these words mean? All of these items are “tools” for local governments to address the housing crisis. The housing crisis is a nuanced situation affecting the entire nation for different reasons. Planners everywhere are tasked with working with much of the “red tape” that comes with housing programs, regulation, and access at every level of government. In New Hampshire, municipalities had the option to turn to the regional planning commissions like SRPC to assist with or conduct these efforts. The four most recent projects include:

A master plan housing chapter and zoning audit for Somersworth, completed July 17.

  • A master plan housing chapter and zoning audit for Somersworth, completed July 17.
  • A master plan housing chapter for Newmarket, to be presented to the town’s planning board shortly and part of a comprehensive update to the town’s whole master plan through 2024 and 2025.
  • Housing and land use chapters of New Durham’s master plan, to be presented to the town’s planning board shortly
  • A zoning audit for Dover.
