December 19, 2024 - The Spirit at Work | |
From Dcn. Nancy
Dear Friends in Christ,
In this Sunday’s Gospel we hear of a time before Jesus’ birth when Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth, also pregnant. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, both she and the baby she carried were filled with joy – overcome with the knowledge that God himself had come right next to them through the child Mary carried in her womb. It says that “Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me?’”
In all the times I’ve read that scripture passage, I think I went straight to the words that were at the end of the sentence, and skipped over what might be the most amazing part. How could I have missed that Elizabeth, three decades before the Pentecost, had been filled with the Holy Spirit as a direct encounter with Jesus? Elizabeth, a lowly woman, was not only the first person to address Jesus in Mary’s womb, but also was light years ahead of the disciples in receiving this gift of grace. God came near, she knew it, and she proclaimed it.
I love this. I love that it shows that God can come near and break through to any one of us at any time, in any circumstance. We can’t make it happen. We can only receive it with joy, and acknowledge it when it does. Sometimes it comes as a direct encounter from God to us, and very often the Holy Spirit comes near to us through other people. I’ve experienced it both ways.
And over the last month I’ve experienced it a lot through the love of this Christ Church family. The recovery from November’s shoulder operation has been more painful and debilitating than I expected, and having to be away from church has really pulled at my heart. But I have been overwhelmed with gratitude for the many, many ways people have reached out to me to let me know I am loved, and missed, and prayed for. I have been fed (literally!) and nourished spiritually by this care. This, indeed, is the work of the Holy Spirit using human hands. And I am even more grateful to know that this outpouring of love isn’t just for me. I see so many faithful people here reaching out to others with cards and prayers, flowers and food, phone calls and rides, hospital visits and helping those in need however that may present itself. These are the everyday things that keep Christ active in the world. This is the Incarnation in Action – this is being “God with skin on” to the world. Jesus came to show us how it’s done, and how amazing is it that by God’s spirit, we have the privilege of allowing another to recognize through our hands, that God has indeed come right next to them!
Peace,
Dcn. Nancy ><>

Music this week at Christ Church
Michael Batcho - Organist & Choirmaster
"O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is arguably the most well-known Advent hymn. One can't imagine going through the season without singing or hearing it. That being said, there are many compositions based on this tune for the organ and/or other instruments. The postlude on the First Sunday of Advent was a roaring toccata by Hailstork based on this hymn. Last Sunday the Handbell Ensemble played a simply beautiful arrangement of it by Hal Hopson. This coming Sunday's prelude is one more setting of this iconic hymn. The composer is Alec Wyton, a British-born and educated Organist/ Choirmaster. In 1950 at the age of 29 he "crossed the pond" to assume this music position at Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis. Four years later he moved to NYC where he served at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine for thirty years. His composition is slow and haunting, evoking a quiet yearning for the coming of the Messiah. Its key feature is a 5 note ostinato (repeating pattern) which is played throughout the four minute piece.
Our choir and other musicians have been working hard for the upcoming Christmas liturgies. The 4:00 service will feature trumpeter Don Sipe and soloist Abby Frieder. At the 9:00 Festive Choral Eucharist the choir and Handbell Ensemble will be joined by guitarist Tom Herbstreith, flutist Marie Sander, oboist Margaret Butler and cellist Adrien Zitoun. In addition to familiar and well-loved carols, music by Ivo Antognini, Andrew Carter, Steve Warner and Carl Schalk will be presented. Music on Christmas Day will include carols and organ voluntaries.
Special Music donations in memory of thanksgiving are welcome and very much appreciated. Thank you for your kindness and generosity! And a blessed Christmas to one and all!

REAL vs. FAKE
There is a debate about whether it's more sustainable to purchase a live Christmas Tree or an artificial tree. Here is an article from the Nature Conservancy: Real vs.Fake—Which Christmas Tree Is Better for the Environment? (nature.org) We seem to be in a culture of “go big!” on decorations. I’m planning to keep mine simple and natural.
Merry Christmas from the Green Team!
