In recent years, Dustin began experiencing numerous age-related health challenges that had no viable remedies. After careful consideration and consultation with veterinary experts, the difficult decision was made to euthanize him to prevent unnecessary suffering.
Dustin's legacy is one of joy and connection. For decades, he delighted countless visitors to the Peoria Zoo with his unique charm and laid-back demeanor. A favorite of guests and staff alike, Dustin had a special fondness for being gently combed by his keepers after a satisfying meal—a ritual that brought smiles to everyone around him. His presence was a source of wonder and education, inspiring a deeper appreciation for wildlife conservation among all who had the privilege of meeting him.
“Dustin was truly one of a kind,” stated Max Lakes, Zoo Director. “His long life with us reflects the incredible bond between our animals and their caretakers. We are grateful for the joy he brought to so many and the memories that will live on in the hearts of our staff and visitors.”
“Dustin was a strength to the species,” said Alyssa Kuzniar, one of Dustin’s Keepers. “He touched many hearts from his keepers and guests while he called Peoria Zoo home. Many, knowing the sloth nature of relaxing through the day, may not have experienced his kind personality and curiosity. He always enjoyed his hand-fed treats that came with morning welfare checks. Often, when he heard his door open, his mouth would already be gaped to receive his favorite steamed fruits. He saved his play for after hours and it was always a pleasure to see him interact with any enrichment or his roommate Roller, an armadillo, all the while hanging upside down to be secure in his perching.”
The Peoria Zoo extends its gratitude to the community for their support during this time. Dustin’s memory will continue to inspire our commitment to the care and conservation of animals, ensuring that his remarkable story is never forgotten.
The Zoo is working closely with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to transfer another sloth to the Zoo; however, there is currently a waiting list.
