As the year draws to a close, we're reflecting on another record-setting year in grants and contracts at Fresno State. Our team in the Division of Research and Graduate Studies (pictured) has an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the collective efforts that have made it all possible. From PIs adding to the research excellence on campus to participants at events such as the Central California Research Symposium, we thank you all for your passion and dedication to advancing Fresno State's research enterprise.

DECEMBER 2024 AWARD REPORT

  • Chelsey Juarez (Anthropology), received a three-year $490,743 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice for her project, “The Central California Missing and Deceased Unidentified Persons Cold Case Initiative."


  • Luca Brillante (Viticulture and Enology) received a three-year $397,017 grant from the California Department of Food and Agriculture for his project, “Plant-Level Early and Autonomous Field-Detection of Virus Infections in White and Black Grape Vines.”


  • Mario Banuelos (Mathematics) received a $95,478 grant from the Schmidt Family Foundation for his project, "Cultivating Innovation and Experiential Learning Opportunities in Data Science."


  • Vicky Xiong-Lor (LEBSE) received a $40,019 grant from AmeriCorps for her project, "Lub Zej Zog: Hmong Educators Coalition Project."


  • Emma Hughes (Criminology) received a two-year, $301,359 grant from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for her project, "Rehabilitative Investment Grants for Healing and Transformation (RIGHT2.0) Grant Program in California Institutions."

LIMITED SUBMISSION

Our office is now accepting applications for the Limited Submission competition for the NSF S-STEM program. Please submit a 3-page narrative (along with CVs for all participating faculty) via InfoReady by Mon., Jan. 6.


The main goal of the S-STEM program is to enable academically talented, low-income students to pursue successful careers in promising STEM fields. Ultimately, S-STEM seeks to increase the number of academically promising low-income students who graduate with an S-STEM eligible degree and contribute to the American innovation economy with their STEM knowledge.

FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS




  • Sangeeta Bansal (Plant Science), was a recipient of the mentor honorariums award at the 2024 Crop Consultant Conference. The $500 award is for an agriculture educator who is training and mentoring the next group of consultants, growers and industry professionals.

CCRS CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The 46th annual Central California Research Symposium is set for Weds., April 23 in the Resnick Student Union. Faculty are asked to encourage their students to participate; the Call for Abstracts is now online. Students from all disciplines are invited to submit their abstracts before the Feb. 27, 2025 deadline. Note that faculty approvals will be due by March 6, 2025.


Save the Date: Fresno State's third-annual Research Week is set for April 21-25, 2025. We'll be turning the spotlight on RSCA (research, scholarship, and creative activity) across campus and disciplines. More information to come.

CONGRATULATIONS BLAKE AND JUDY!

Join us in congratulating our own Blake Greenwood and Judy Gagnebin on receiving their CRA certification from the Research Administrators Certification Council (RACC)! Obtaining certification means that an individual has met the eligibility requirements of RACC and has demonstrated achievement of an advanced level of knowledge and understanding of the principles, concepts, and regulations for administering research. Congrats to them both!
