This Month in Nursing History

Astronaut nurse Delores B. O'Hara, R.N., in the Aeromedical Laboratory at Cape Canaveral, Florida, takes a blood sample from Mercury astronaut John Glenn

Dolores B. "Dee" O'Hara became the first space nurse in November 1959, joining NASA and Project Mercury where she cared for the first U.S. astronauts.

O'Hara recounted her experience:

"The night before the flight, I was out there all evening. One of my jobs was to call and wake the various support people and get them up well in advance of the launch. Then I would go and wake up the crew, and the crew would come in to the exam area, and we, of course, did his temperature, his blood pressure, heart rate, and got his weight. ... I could feel the anxiety building up, particularly in myself. It was kind of a scary time, and I’m sure it was for a lot of people, and you could kind of feel the tension in the air."

O’Hara was part of the NASA team through every flight in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs, including the 1969–72 moon landings. “I think at one point I had a patient census of 500,” she later recalled.
