CareCloud: Advice from SCRC's Team of Experts | |
When visiting your relatives for the holidays, it can be difficult to distinguish signs of normal, healthy aging from symptoms of atypical aging, Alzheimer’s disease, or related disorders. I recommend that family members answer the following questions about their loved ones' behavior:
- Does the individual need frequent or even constant reminders about what they’re doing and why? Do they struggle to carry out tasks without these reminders?
- Does the individual struggle to maintain their focus for an extended period?
- Do you notice any changes in your loved one’s mobility, including reduced speed, frequent loss of balance, or tripping?
- Does your relative experience heightened anxiety? Are they reluctant or even afraid to do things they used to do frequently?
- Is the individual exhibiting symptoms of depression, including fatigue or persistent feelings of sadness?
If you answer “yes” to one or more of these questions, I recommend sharing your observations with the affected family member. Express your concern for their safety and that, above all else, you want to ensure they are happy, healthy, and comfortable. Then, discuss a plan for support with other family members. For example, if your aging loved one struggles with decreased mobility and has trouble going grocery shopping, family members can create a rotating schedule to drop off food and supplies. Your plan may vary in length and complexity depending on your loved one’s symptoms and the extent of support required.
Community resources are a vital tool in starting your caregiving journey. Southern Caregiver Resource Center offers several online, educational materials on the aging process, home safety for aging individuals, and how to best support your elderly loved one. I recommend starting with the following content:
