Updates & Reminders

Senior Activity Center Closures

The O'Malley Senior Activity Center and Annex will be closed on the following days:

The O'Malley Seniors, Inc. (OSI) netted over $2,300 for the Holiday Flea Market and $250 for the Plant Sale in December.


Grateful to those who donated items and to those who shopped to support us. 

AARP Tax-Aide

The O’Malley Senior Activity Center will be offering the AARP Tax Assistance Program. This is a free service that is coordinated by AARP.


Appointments are required.


Beginning on Tuesday, January 21st, you can call or stop by the center to schedule an appointment. Appointment slots will begin in February.


Intake forms must be picked up before your appointment!

Local Van Trips


Thursday, January 9th-Walmart

Bus Departs at 9:30 AM and Returns at 12:00 PM


A van from Partners in Care, Inc. will take participants to Walmart in Severn. Participants are responsible for all the costs of their trip.


Tuesday, January 21st-Arundel Mills Mall

Bus Departs at 10:00 AM and Returns at 1:30 PM


A van from Partners in Care, Inc. will take participants to the Arundel Mills Mall in Hanover. Participants are responsible for all the costs of their trip.

AACC Winter 2025 Registration


AACC Winter 2025 courses will begin the week of Monday, January 6th.

Canasta


Thursdays, 9:45AM-11:15AM


Teammates sit across from each other on opposite ends of a table. Shuffle 2 decks of cards together, including the jokers, and deal 11 cards to each player each round. Play melds (3 or more cards of the same rank) or canastas (a meld of 7 or more cards) to earn points. The first team to 5,000 points wins.


Volunteer, Barbara Wallenstein will be on hand to teach you how to play the game of Canasta. If you are a card player-you will love it. Beginners can learn in about 20 minutes!


The group will meet weekly.

O’Malley Quilters were busy elves the month of December sewing pillowcases for BWMC Acute Care Unit.


O'Malley Quilting Club meets on Fridays at the Annex from 1:00pm-4:00pm.

Experience in quilting required.

Reserve your space for a personalized 15 min. reflexology treatment.


Reflexology is the application of pressure to areas of the feet to generally relax and alleviate stress. The theory behind reflexology is that certain areas of the foot correspond to the organs and systems of the body. Pressure applied to the foot is believed to bring relaxation and healing to the corresponding area of the body.


*Please note the weight limit for the reflexology chair is 250 lbs.*

Scott's Painting Workshop

Join Scott Clark for an afternoon of fun and painting! Each person will create a masterpiece that you will be able to take home.

Diabetes Support Group

Whether you're pre-diabetic, a newly diagnosed diabetic or have been managing your diabetes for a long time, please join us for the new Diabetes Support Group. You aren't the only one managing--talk with other diabetics. Caregivers for diabetics are also welcome. Led by volunteer Lynne Zeigler.

Advance Care Planning


Tuesday, January 14th, 8:30AM-12:30PM


University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC) is excited to provide education and assistance to center members who are interested in advance care planning (MOLST and advance directive forms). In order to meet the needs of the members, the senior activity centers will have monthly scheduled sessions available to meet with the UM BWMC case manager, for anyone who would like to complete these documents. The case manager is also available to meet with a member separately at a scheduled appointment, if needed.


The case manager, Dawn Baker, MSN, MS, RN, CCRN, CHPN, has over 40 years of experience as a registered nurse. She currently works as the palliative care case manager in Population Health at UM BWMC.

Beyond the Break

This workshop, developed by the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation, focuses on educating participants about bone health, osteoporosis prevention, and strategies for maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle. The workshop will be taught by Jennifer Jackson, Program Coordinator for the Health Promotions program at the Department of Aging and Disabilities. Participants will gain valuable insights into bone care, nutrition, and exercise tailored to their needs for better long-term health outcomes.

The True Love Story

Join JoAnn Rich as she discusses the true love story of Tsar Nicholas II and Alexandra. She will go into detail about how they met and what obstacles they had to overcome before marrying. It will cover their youth and life up to their wedding and coronation. She will also explain how hemophilia was in Queen Victoria's family and made its way to Alexandra's son.

Toward the Better End

Join a representative from the Luminis Health Gilchrist Lifecare Institute as they go over End of Life Decisions, Palliative Care, and Hospice Care.


The goals are:

  1. To understand the basics of palliative care - its services, insurance coverage, eligibility
  2. To understand the basics of hospice - its philosophy, services, insurance coverage, eligible diagnoses
  3. To understand the importance of talking with loved ones about end of life, advance directives and grief
  4. To understand where hospice care is provided and what it really means
  5. To understand what dying patients need
  6. To understand what an interdisciplinary team is and who is involved
  7. To understand the difference between palliative care and hospice care
  8. To understand that all hospice care is palliative, but not all palliative care is hospice
  9. To understand that the patient can change his/her mind at any time
  10. To understand why early referrals are important, when to call, myths vs reality

Center Services & Information

Membership

The O'Malley Senior Activity Center offers free membership to individuals 55 and over who are active, self-sufficient, and able to function independently. For more information, visit us in person or give us a call at 410-222-6227 for additional information about classes and activities.


Flea Market

We have a flea market open daily; run by volunteers. Donated items are always accepted at the Front Office. All proceeds benefit OSI.


Books

We sell books! Paperbacks are $0.50 and Hardbacks are $1.00. Feel free to stop by anytime and browse. All proceeds benefit OSI.


Snack Cart

Snacks, water, and sodas are available through our snack bar. All proceeds benefit OSI.


Lunch Program

Meals are served at the Center, Monday-Friday at noon. Reservations must be made two weeks in advance, in person. Cancellations are required by 10:00AM the day before the meal is served, and must be called in at (410) 222-6223 between the hours of 9:00am-1:00pm. In an effort to support the ongoing and future work of the Congregate Meal Program, voluntary donations are encouraged. No eligible person will be denied a meal if unable to donate. Each congregate meal costs $5.25.


Anne Arundel County Office of Transportation

Provides rides to seniors 55+ and individuals with disabilities to senior activity centers, nutrition sites, medical appointments, and for other needs. Wheelchair vans are available. Advance reservations of one to two weeks are required. To schedule transportation, call (410) 222-0022.


Wi-Fi Service

There is free Wi-Fi service available in the Center. Look for "Guest@Anne" on your mobile device. No password needed.


SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program)

A representative from the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities is available to answer your questions regarding Medicare Part D Open Enrollment, Medicare & Medicaid eligibility, long term care insurance, supplemental health insurance, medical claims management, and more. Call (410) 222-4257 to make an appointment.


Maryland Access Point (MAP)

This service is provided by Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities. MAP is the "one stop shop" for older adults, individuals with disabilities, and caregivers to both private and public resources. An Options Counselor is available to help you access resources.
